my friend took ignition system from fiesta hcs engine...working fine...
The only problem that is putting me off is no one seems to have done this and if I have to buy a £400 ECU as well as everything else then I can't afford it. Argh this is doing my head in.

Sierra 1.8 CVH sump & pick up pipe will fit.
We need to set up a Zetec conversion bit on this forum so this conversion can be done cheaper with everybodies help

What about the ecu from a late model xr3i along with the wiring loom does anyone know if this will work as that is electronic injection as well???????
Luds you got photos of the sump and pickup pipe modifications or do they bolt straight on? And what car does it work for? I don't think the xr3i system is gonna be much good. You don't need the injection part cos its cheaper and easier to use carbs. You need something to do ignition cos the zetec uses distributerless ignition. I think some late cvh carb models had this and this might work. Possibly the sierra/granada dohc engine (yuk) might have an ecu that would work as I think some came with a carb instead of injection. We definately need a zetec section. How about an engine conversion section with cossy, xe and zetec subsections? could be an idea. I'm off to look at a zetec install to make a final decision....zetec or pinto.

direct ignition system from fiesta/escort HCS-engine has one drawback. Rev.limit is set to 7500RPM. but in daily cruising should not be a problem.
very easy to install...i have advance curve somewhere...
i will buy Mondeo 2.0 zetec "black top" with mechanical valve lifters. 1998 onwards.
just wondering, can i use the same DCOE intake manifold what is used with older zetec. is there any difference in bolt pattern and port sizes?
I thought thats the limit of a zetec anyway even with arp bolts on the rods? I've decided to go with a pinto anyway now because its going to cost too much money. Dammit
Having tried this engine conversion ( and spent enough money to fund a small south american army), I can say that when these things run right, they are extremely quick and ecenomical. Like all things, theres a cheap and expensive way to go around doing it.
My advise would be to buy mounts and a water rail ' off the shelf' and to then buy a CVH sump, ignition pack, and to go for an 1800 zetec motor as these seem to need less expensive bits to make them go.
allrighty then, now i have bought a new blacktop 2.0 zetec engine.
wasn't cheap, but sure is clean.

Looks like you have the same outlet on your engine.
I think you can blank the outlet from the back of the engine with plate and drill into the water jacket in the head and have an outlet from the side instead. Then you don't need to buy a water rail. Thats what it looks like to me anyway.

I have spoken to a m8 with a zetec in his 1950's Ford pop & he is running a xr3i coil on a homemade bracket driven off the exhaust cam with a standard ignition loom and twin carb's and he says it runs sweet
hiya peeps!! ive just fitted a 2.0ltr focus blacktop into my mk2 orion! (i dont know why either?!) but i have been living in scrapyards for the past couple of weeks!! i used a mondeo ECU and engine loom (its separate from the main car loom) and a few hours reading the haynes manual wiring diagram to find out where the wires go to! because its an alloy block most of the wires are earths so thats easily sorted... ive had to fit 3 relays and a fuse box for the possitive side of things.. but if i can do it im sure everyone can!!
ive had it running but not for long coz i havnt sorted the coolant pipes out yet... back to the scrappy tomorrow then!!!
while doing this conversion a seem to come across people who say they know how its done but wouldnt give up any info?? its as if they say ive struggled so you can too!!!
but we are all in this game together so why not help each other out??!!
so if i can be of any help whatso ever please email or post on here.... just got to get my computer re-routed to the scrappy now!!!

alloy block??? did i misunderstood something? is there an alloy cylinder block in your 2.0 blacktop engine? mine is cast iron? i thought only duratec comes with alloy block?
its obviously been too long a day in the scrap yard today then!!! but MOST of the sensors are either on plastic (inlet manifold and thermo housing) or the alloy head... thanks for pointing that out to me matey!! im now off for a good lie down in a dark room somewhere!!!

No thats a Duratec. Much better engine too. If its cheap go for it. Thats the all alloy one. More power than a zetec and much lighter too. Just harder to get the conversion parts for. I think Burton do them though.
My 2001 Focus has got a Black top Zetec in
the engine ive got is a black-top focus one! (and its the cast one not the alloy one!) the engine itself wasnt too bad for fitting, it was the wiring that i had most hassle with!!
the mondeo engine has the sump at the diffrent end of the engine and i belive it catches on the g/box x-member... so the sump and pick-up pipe need to be changed, the focus has a strenthening intermediate sump wich has to be ground at the rear to clear the driveshaft but other than that it was just like fitting a cvh back in!!

do all blacktops have same waterpump. i would like to change direction of rotation, and replace the pulley to one with grooves
i think its only the mondeo with the stupid long belt that goes the WRONG way!!

You can use the ignition from any carb CVH with HCS ignition and then use either twin choke weber on modified CVH manifold or twin 40/45's webers with a four branch. This definatly works

well in the above pics it looks like its in!! and ive had it running too!! fitting the engine in was the easy bit!
I think he means in a RWD car. Its a lot more involved. The best way is to mod the bulkhead and use the dunnel sump/mounts and the raceline water rail. An easier way is to use the Retro Ford stuff because it doesn't require any body mods. It mounts the weight further forward though so not helping the handling. Bit of a question mark over how good their sumps are too. Ashley do a manifold for the zetec that I think bolts to an x-flow system.

I use the Dunnel sumps, and yes the engine is a few inches further back, and yes the gearbox tunnel does need enlarging, and the bulkhead has to go back, but dunnel has been doing this for a few years, and I've never heard of any problems with oil surge. Dave Whites (Gulf Oils MK2 RS2000) car has the Dunnel engine mounts, flywheel, clutch and sump, Raceline water rail and stat housing, MBE Ecu (mappable) 45's, and hit 173 bhp on the rollers from a standard 136ps mondeo 2L. have a look at the attachment.
