Mark, I've just had a look at your site...I think I will be calling yourself and Clint quite a few times over the coming months!

How much was the rear axle/suspension? As mentioned above, I'm thinking of using Billie coilovers and a single leaf setup, coupled to a standard RS2000 rear axle.

You will have to ask Clint the cost of his axle, he is using a Atlas which is much more expensive than a "English" as fitted to a RS2000, the English axle is the same as what is already in your car, the only difference is the diff ratio.
If you want to five link the car the best way to go is coil overs at the rear as well, and get rid of the leaf springs altogether.
I would reccomend a LSD if you are going to run 200bhp or you will sit on the spot spinning one wheel all the time, also if you can afford it the Atlas is a lot more capable of handling that power output.

If its of any interest i've beem informed that an axel from a VOLVO 240 Can be narowed to fit and will take up to 300 bhp standard with no probs. evidently a lot of Drag Racers use them!!!!. "strange but true" . Cheers. Rick.

If you decide to buy a modded Atlas axle you will pick your own ratio from Quaiffe or whoever builds it, won't be cheap though.
If you decide to modify (shorten) one that you have bought second hand (Capri 2.8i) then the ratio will be 3.09:1
A bit too high for what you want.
Given the car I decsribed earlier (tyre size, gearbox 3500rpm etc) If it had a 3.09 fitted it would be travelling at 83mph for that speed.
Fine for relaxed high speed cruising, not so good for acceleration. Unless you have BIG horsepower.

You would have to get a crown wheel and pinion in the ratio you want, this is why it works out more expensive, but this is the best option for performance and strength.
The LSD really needs to be set up by a diff specialist to get the best from it, (unless you get one already assembled with the correct ratio for the english axle as this one fits in as a unit)

I think you've answered a question for me...spend some time looking for a 2nd hand one. If it's a tough as old boots, then as long as it hasn't been in a full race series, it should be ok for me.

So, I've got the engine nailed, the gearbox, diff, brakes, and suspension...all that's left is the bodyshell!

Another question...what size rims can I fit? Are the satndard rims 13"? 15's would be ideal, and they'd give me more room for the cossie brake upgrade.

The bodyshell can be the worst bit, make sure whoever is doing the restoration cuts all of the rust out completely, leave any in and it can be back in weeks with a Mk1 or 2.

You are right standard rims are 13" you can use up to 15" on a mk1 with standard arches, max width of 6" , or 7" if you remove the arch lip at the rear and get the right offset.
Any bigger diameter and they don't seem to handle as well, a friend had a set of 17" OZ Super "T"s on his Mk1 with Cossie power, they looked great but he didn't like the feel.

You can get fairly big brakes under a set of 13"s I think Clint does some kits for these.

I think I'll go the 15" route...that might help my top speed as well! Most sizes are 6 or 6.5" so that shouldn't be a problem. A set of 5 spokes should also help with brake cooling as opposed to the solid 4 spokes. At the mo', I'm thinking of Compomotives...a Mk2 had a set at ND on track which looked pretty cool.

Dingy uses compomotive's on his mk2 and they look smart i think they do different colours as well to order.
regarding the atlas axle to fit this you will need to have a atlas diff tunnel fitted and the axle you will need is the baby atlas axle. these are from the mk1 capri 3.0 and are rare as rocking horse poo!!
A well built english axle with quaife LSD will cope with the power (imho) you can get uprated halfshafts for the english axle from quaife (not cheap though) but it would be cheaper to rebuild your english axle with new bearings and the quaife LSD than convert the car to the Atlas axle.
Jeff are you going to keep the pinto? and stick some webbers on it? if you are then i think the english axle will cope.
then fit a 5speed gearbox from a capri 2.8i (better ratios than sierra box) and a single piece prop and you will be sorted.
the input shaft on the capri box will need milling down by approx 1".

Cheers for the info...I'm learning all the time.

I'll be paying Clint a visit tonight to pay for the pinto...I've assembled about 90% of the engine parts, including an RS2000 sump and bell-housing. I'm also getting a front pair of Billies from Clint so the suspension is on its way. I'm ALSO getting a 2wd front disc setup from that man Clint!!!

I've spoken to Race Power who agree a re-build of the standard diff with new bearings & LSD is the best route. The pinto will deffo use twin 48's with a big valve head and a Heskey (I think) cam...cossie pistons, and either cossie rods or a set of diesel rods. The crank will be lightened and balanced, as will the flywheel, but what clutch do you recommend???
