Fuel Injected Renault 5 Hillclimb and track car

    Morning All,

I though that you might be interested in my Renault 5 GT Turbo project. I've owned it for about a year and am currently converting it from carb to fuel injection. I'm intending to entering it into the roadgoing production class and doing a few hillclimbs and maybe the odd sprint later in the year as it's a good few years since I did any competitive motorsport.
Racesuit arrived last week and I'm going to be sending off for my licence over the weekend.

It should be back up and running in a few weeks, but thought I'd get some pics up and keep you posted as I do a bit of track prep.

    Hope you like.

    Jake

Car is currently sat looking a bit sorry for itself grubby in the garage
(For the eagle eyed who spotted the race seat, it's not left hand drive, i was measuring up for seat mounts and passenger seat was already out so it got plonked there!)

Engine currently waiting me to fab up the final boost hose and connect the fuel lines so that I can try firing her up.

Custom fuel injection setup. It's a stock R5 manifold that I welded injector bosses into. The fuel rail is slightly awkward, but had to be to avoid all of the other parts in the way. Quite pleased with how it worked out though.

(Please excuse the ugly aluminium welding, I'm fairly competent at tig'ing steel but definitely could have picked an easier project for my first attempt at welding aluminium!)

    Cardboard is temporary.

ECU, Lambda controller, relays and fuses all stashed away in the glove box.

New boost gauge in the dash so I can keep an eye on it when the laptop isn't plugged in.

Ford coil pack is mounted the other side of the bulkhead/firewall to keep it out of harms way and temperatures down.

36-1 trigger wheel in the crank pulley. Hall effect crank sensor is hiding just out of shot.

Nice... I love the old R5...

How much more power are you expecting to get out of it with the mods? I know some people had them running ridiculously big power back in the 90's ... OHV 1.4 if i remember correctly.

Yeah it's a 1.4 OHV, they are a pretty antiquated engine.

I don't really have a power target, the aim of the mods was really more for tractability and midrange power, so that should improve. The engine is still original inside and it feels fairly tired and boost will stay at stock level for the time being until I've got it all running right, so I'm not sure.
Renault claimed about 120bhp back in the 80s and I understand that hittting 200 isnt too much effort if you can sort the fueling, which I will have covered.

I will run in the under 2 litre class (because of the turbo), so I'll wait and see how much more power I need to be remotely competitive.

I had a r5 turbo in tungsten too. Was 180hp and fast! Loved it.
