    Re: Australian Forest Escort

Cars just about ready for its first dance on the gravel.....took her for a drive and she goes pretty well for what she is!

First event on the 31st March is a charity ride day for kids with cancer so a good shakedown and a good cause! Can't beat that!

I've changed over to the forest setup ready...

I think I'll have to now to match it all up...thanks for all the comments lads. I just hope it still looks like this after the weekend! First time out in 5 years and not many of those were on gravel so I'll be bricking it on Saturday morning.

                  Re: Australian Forest Escort

Well the weekend was awesome due to the company we had and the reasons for the event!

The car and driver need a bit of work to say the least.
The Escort started well then the main ignition fuse came loose cutting all power, with that restored I spent my time looking at oil pressure and water temps just to be safe. It was very hot and rough!

The temp went up too much at the end of each stage so that will need looking at. Then after a pretty good attack at a hairpin I ripped the rear tyre off the rim and the front shock top mount nut came off which ended play as a didn't have any spares.

I was a bit gutted that I couldn't take any more people around for the ride too be honest as its such a good cause but it was a truly humbling experience and a really good first test for the car and driver!

Here is a short compilation my son Ethan has done on youtube of the event....enjoy.

Well done on your first event - ripping a rear tyre off sounds scary!

                      Re: Australian Forest Escort

Well its been over a year...I have been out of work twice, the engine and box have been in and out at least 4 times but finally I think I've turned a corner.

I fixed the oil leak that ruined 2 clutches by spending hours filing down the very slightly raised Tig welding on the Retrosport wet sump to make sure it was flatter than a flat thing! Then I used a different gasket glue and it finally has a good seal.

I decided to enter Saturdays Murwillumbah CARnival as mine and the cars first proper Australian event to try and see if it would hold together and to see if I had gotten to old?

First of all the car and the driver still need some work as I am rusty and the car needs setting up BUT I can't say I wasn't chuffed with coming first outright with both the lowest accumulative time over 6 runs as well as fastest time of the day. So it looks like there is some life in me yet but I've got to be honest the car is by far the quickest thing I have driven in anger....just need a set of cams, rods and pistons and she should be pretty competitive.

nice car, I noticed that you are not running a header tank for the cooling - hows is that working out for you? Also would you be able to tell me which radiator you are using (if you got it off the shelf of course). Cheers and all the best!

I am running a big header grp4 rad from out of the UK. Can't remember where from but they are basically all the same? It hasn't overheated so far and it was a hot 30 degrees in the shade on Saturday.

Thanks for the reply Mark. Sounds good, I think I'll try and souce one locally as they tend to cost a lot to get shipped (as much as the Rad sometimes!). Cheers.
