Mk1 Ford Escort Trackcar - New Zealand

Thought it was time went from a project to competition thread.

Have competed in two events so far, both times very happy with how it went.

    Engine
    - FE3 DOHC with RB25DET turbo, engine re built, lightened flywheel, 5 pac clutch, adjustable cam gear, alloy radiator with twin fans, oil cooler, 2.5" muff
    Computer
    - G1 V5 Link tuned by SHRED industries.
    Cage
    - fabricated by Frost motorsport, 8 point cage from front strut tower to rear turrets.
    Driveline
    - One piece drivesharft, REAR; un shortened hilux diff with 2wd 5X114.3 studd axles and LSD head, fxgt calipers on s14 disks. 0 offset 8" wheels, toyo 888 tyres. Turrited with GAZ coil overs, panhard and tramp bar. FRONT; Adjustable coil overs with adjustable GAZ chocks, adjustable TCA's, 3 point sway bar, vented disks and AP calipers. Mintex pads. 5X114.3 hubs.
    Body
    - Matt silver to hide my lack of interest in preparation for paintjobs, 100mm extra wide flares on each side, lex windows, TEX mirrors, Racetech tow rope, Ducts to front calipers,

Motor is only tuned to a safe 300hp for now which is still a bit of fun for a noob. Want to get a hang of driving and dial in the handling before I focus on power, guys have comfortably gotten 400 - 700hp out of these engines so I plan to build up a spare with a better turbo, computer and bits n bobs to slot in at some stage, have a fair few parts already for this.

1st time on track went out with a group of 8 skylines/Silvia's and set fastest lap that I was quite chuffed about, was only going out to get a feel of the breaks and lines to take. Really enjoying the learning to drive aspect and the new challenge of pushing driver and machine. Already have a list of things I want to improve, Will probably end up re doing everything on the car but that's ok its allot more interesting now the cars running and can feel the changes.

Any sponsors out there? Lots of space for stickers

Re: Mk1 Ford Escort Trackcar - New Zealand

Entered the final round eight of the Road&Track series, felt a bit less like a noob this time which feels good.

Quite happy with how the car went, learnt a few lessons. Camber and a proper wheel alignment made the car go around corners 99.9% better! Car went really well the first 3 times out, was passing a few cars that was fun, then the 4th time out had a little electrical issue and looks like fuel pump has shorted out.

Lesson 1; don’t get all the way to southwards car museum and remember you have forgotten your log book! Makes for a long day driving all the way back to Wellington for it, DOW won’t do that again!

Lesson 2; (partly as a result of lesson 1) miss out on getting a transponder and then be a dyslexic retard put a 266 on the side of your car instead of a 226 and not get your times recorded  Had the in car lap timer that had a 1.28 on it which I’m a little disappointed with but I don’t think i got any ful clean laps and didn’t want to be to aggressive with the passing as its not really supposed to be a race the sprints I was in (no passing on corners).

Mechanical side, she was blowing a bit of smoke under heavy engine breaking by the final race. The two first things I suspect are I have put to light an oil in it (10 40) and the oils getting past the rings, which dropped the pressure at idle when hot and was bit scary but should be fine. Or the turbo has done a seal? Which i know this engine is known for doing to turbos, possible due to bad oil supply? Will need to do some research on turbos
Electrical meltdown on final time out appears to be a shorted out fuel pump wire but still TBC hopefully it’s not anything to nasty.

Very happy with how well the brakes are working! Aiden (as passenger & experienced driver) was impressed with them. Quite happy with the amount of power the car has also, just right for learning but enough that its not boring.

Stiffened up the rear and she’s allot more stable in the bum now, getting a little bit of tramp launching but i think its tolerable, could probably refine launch technique from drift spec yo.
