There doesn't seem to be anything on this site about the Zetec SE engine so I want to start a discussion on this relatively new and undiscovered high reving highly tuneable engine.
The Zetec SE is known in the US as the Sigma engine,
and later 1.6 Zetec SE's with variable valve timing are labelled as Duratec Ti-VCT (Twin independant Variable Camshaft Timing) engines.
The engine comes in 1250cc, 1400cc, 1600cc, and 1700cc.
They are fitted in ford Fiesta, Focus and Puma.
The 1700cc engine only comes in the puma and the racing puma delivers 155bhp at 6000rpm.
The 1.6 litre unit produces 99bhp at 6000rpm and 104ft.lbf at 4000rpm and 115bhp with variable valve timing.
This engine is very popular in the kit-car market because of its low weight and easy tuneability.
Yamaha helped to design this all alloy lightwieght powerplant which only weighs 82kg!
With heavy duty con-rod bolts fitted these engines can rev to 8000rpm.
Shawspeed say you can get 220bhp out of the 1600cc unit with the standard size valves!
That is 137.5bhp per litre!
Shawspeed sell tunning kits from 120bhp right up to 210bhp.
Here's a link to the Shawspeed website.

Another Zetec SE tuner is BPJ services.
If you click on Duratec 1.4/2.5 offer in the website you will see some more information.

In my opinion this engine is as good if not better than the 1.6 BDA engine.
You can get just as much power from a Zetec SE for a fraction of the cost of an expensive BDA.
For a mk2 escort competition rallycar 200bhp is easily achievable with,
A Pair of 300 degree 10mm lift cams + HD springs,
Vernier pulleys,
Ported and flowed head,
Forged pistons and rods,
45mm throttle bodies + a programable ECU,
(Or possibly 45mm webbers with a belt driven vauxhall distributor instead of TB's and ECU)
11 to 11.5 compression ratio,
Competion bronze bearings.
This engine would be ideal for rallying or racing in a modified 1600cc class and would also make a very good fast road engine when tuned to about 160bhp.
If you have any other info please add it to this Thread.
