If its a Zakspeed car then thats a GP2 car, GP4's had the boxes
Mmmmmm. Interesting point this. The car is advertised as a Grp 2, but it has a dry sump, and a ZF 5 speed box, both which, under Appendix J Grp 2 regulations, would make it group 4. I must admit I'm not sure - could depend when the car was built.

The old grp 2 regs have change like the car probably, those engines will have been changed over the years and also if the car stayed in competition then it would have used the rules to the best advantage.

Just had a look in an old Blue Book(1993), and theres a section in there about the old regs and when they changed, it states that the old J groups under new rules could have modified engines as long as they where externally identifieable as the original engine, (FVA/BDA engines allowed) and classed as MOD PROD Saloons.

Yeah I don't know why I keep the old Blue Books as well

Have you got a link for the ad?

I think there may be a difference between the the RACMSA accept/accepted and what the FIA laid down.

At the end of the life of the Mk 1 Escort when it was fully developed with 2.0 alloy BDA, ZF box, dry sump, etc, etc the car was homologated as a Grp 2 (not as Grp 4 as people mistakenly refer to). When the Mk II came out in 1975 it was the same spec as the Mk 1 and was group 2. However with the introduction of Appendix J in 1976 many of the performance parts on the Mk 1/early Mk II were outlawed - such as; 2.0 engines, dry sumps, ZF boxes, tripple plate clutch, etc. By way of compensation however the FIA allowed the Mk II cars to run as Grp 4 in the "old" Grp 2 spec. hence the Ford works cars continued to be successfully rallied as Grp 4 cars. This did not help Zakspeed however because they ran in the European Grp 2 championship and therefore had to revert to wet sump engines which kept blowing up - this eventually lead to them withdrawing from the European Championship. It was only later that they came back with the mega-arched turbo monsters which were neither Grp 2 nor Grp 4 (I think they were Grp 5 - but not sure).

Link for the Zakspeed car is here:

Mmm was hoping it would give full details of the suspension.

I think its still down to the car being updated that it has the xtras... just wondering if its on leaves and un-linked with just the allowed turret mods.

Your right about the later cars , ran in GP5/6

Interesting ads. Notice the Grp 2 cars were running the spec I mentioned; no ZF box, single plate clutch (but dry-sumped), etc. (I recall that the FIA did relax the rules in the late 70s to allow dry sumps -Appendix J made quite a mess when it came out, and was subsequently modified).

                  Re: Zakspeed Mk2 Escorts

Very interesting , I thought the GP5's used the 1700 turbo engines. But the german spec says the 1400's where in there keeping the cars in the under 2000cc class.

The real burning question should be ......
" where are they now? "
