Anyway, we're really pleased with the engine, which has now been mapped, and is giving 262bhp at 8248rpm, and 188lbft of torque. The torque figure is a big improvement over the last engine.

We had a short test with the car at an outdoor kart track in Preston (never got it out of 1st and 2nd gear), and have a list of problems/niggles to sort out before this weekends rally.

First impression is that the new engine pulls like a train compared to the old one, but we won't really know until it's out on the stages.
Bloody hell, thats alot of power!
I am running DA10 cams too, with a long stroke crank.
Cant wait to get it on the rollers!

You should have loads of torque with the longer stroke cam.

Are you running inlet and exhaust DA10 cams? Are you on carbs or fuel inj?

Steve had a disapointing Fat Albert Stages Rally.

The car was great, and he was running 5th in class out of 30 cars in our class - which was great, especially considering he hasn't driven the car for over 2 years.

His daughter was co-driving, but was throwing up a lot. She wasn't going to go on, but decided to give it another stage. Unfortunatley Steve selected the wrong gear, and blew the gearbox into 2 pieces.

It looks like the engine has survived unscathed.

We are desperately trying to get things back together for the Richard Burns Memorial Rally in 9 days time, when Steve will be co-driving for me.

Good luck with getting her done in time, it will be worth it cos the RBMR is a cracker. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, yes, it eats tyres, shell grip surface and very long stages mean that you will need some rubber about. Again, good luck and hope to hear a good report.

Both cams are DA10 and i'm on tapered T/B's.

I hope to get it fired up in the next few weeks!

I thought I saw your car in the paddock at Fat Albert, but didn't get a chance to say hello

Shame about the gearbox, you were setting some good times up to then

                I hope the engine's ok - that's a decent amount of power you've got

Good luck with getting it back together for the Richard Burns

Cheers Gavin, I meant to come over and say hello but was kept busy in between stages.

                  Congratulations on a great result.

Re: MK1 Escort Tarmac Rally Car

Well the Richard Burns Memorial rally didn't go too well, a problem with the alternator finally putting us out. I've done a write up in the Motorsport Chat section.

We didn't get the gearbox back until Thursday lunchtime, so it was all a bit last minute, as we had to set off for Norfolk on the Friday morning.

It was still a great weekend, and we've come away with a few things we need to do to the car - one of the brake pipes needs more heat protection from the exhaust manifold, we need to fit window sliders to the side windows to get more air in (our current vent holes aren't enough), the axle needs new oil seals, and we only just scraped thro' the noise test, so we'll replace the back box.

I was really pleased with the new engine, and also how well balanced the car felt. After playing around with the suspension, there was always a chance it might not have worked.

The power steering that we've fitted is one of the best things we've done, I didn't feel like I was fighting the car, and it's allowed us to run a lot more castor. I had to do one of the stages without it working, and it was a nightmare - must get back to the gym!!

It was good to meet quite a few fellow Turbosporters - we should put in team entries next year

Think with that brake pipe you should do it in aeroquip and get it out of the engine bay as soon as possible, mine comes out of the master clinder and straight through the inner wing and is metal p clipped to the inner wing then over to the strut where we use big f**k off cable ties then into the caliper!

Do you get to the bottom of your charging problem? Spares must are starter motor and alternator! Did you see the pics my mate took of you?

I'll look into re-routing the brake pipe, thanks for the suggestion.

I haven't seen any photo's of my car on the rally, where will I find your mates photo's?

Ha ha, 2 minutes after writing that I 've found the photo's on the RBMR thread.

I'll pm you my e-mail address.

Was the photographer the young lad who went round service before the rally explaining he would be taking pictures, but didn't want to upset any official photographers?

                              Thanks for the comment.

They're getting rarer and rarer on rallies nowadays, but there was a handful of MK1's out on the Richard Burns rally, which was more than I've seen out for quite a while.

Nice to see you albeit briefly at the weekend Phil. Matt kept me pretty busy all weekend and I didn't get much chance to disappear other than for a burger or to go and get the times from rally HQ
