They're getting rarer and rarer on rallies nowadays, but there was a handful of MK1's out on the Richard Burns rally, which was more than I've seen out for quite a while.
Was it you I met down at the Squires place last week collecting the gearbox and a box full of spares then?

      Cheers

Hi Andy, no it was me Steve, Phil's much faster brother! I remember you were telling me about your Mk1 escort historic build, have you got a thread started on it yet? Would be interested to follow it.

It was a nice change to sit next to Phil on the RB and see things from another angle. The performance of the car is awesome and Phil didn't show any signs of being rusty after our two year lay off. Just need to work on the reliability now and come up with some results.

          Hi Steve,

Sorry to hear you didn't get a finish on the RB. The issues do sound relatively small and easily fixed so that's good.

My thread for the Mk1 is http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthre...-go-at-the-Mk1 - it is early days yet though!

          Cheers

Re: MK1 Escort Tarmac Rally Car

We 've made a few improvements to the car since the Richard Burns Rally.

We've replaced the old perspex door windows with polycarbonate ones which have nice big sliders to let plenty of fresh air in, together with pop out vents in the rear quarters.

We've re-routed one of the front brake pipes so that it doesn't go thro' the engine bay (thanks Ashley for the suggestion), as we believe it was too near the exh manifold.

Fitted a nice big wide interior mirror, as the old one wouldn't stay in place, and kept dropping during the stages. This new one also mounts directly to the cage, so should be out of the way of the in-car camera.

Replaced the back box on the exh system as we were right on the limit for noise at the last rally.

Will be fitting some nice DTM type door mirrors (hopefully tomorrow).

I'm competing in the Promenade Stages Rally this Saturday (11th Sept), with my 16 year old daughter making her co-driving debut!! It should be a good event - there are some WRC cars, a couple of 6R4's, Darrians, and plenty of Escorts. There are 29 cars in my class, so we won't be picking up any silverware, but it should be good fun.

You got your spare alternator with your dry sump pulley on it just incase? If you have he spares you wont need em!!

It's very tight and twisty, and we never got the car above 2nd gear !!

Re: MK1 Escort Tarmac Rally Car

Well we managed to finish the Promenade Stages .... just.

We had quite a few problems, including losing all the front brake fluid (and having to do over half a stage on rear brakes only), the engine threw the alternator and water pump belts, the new starter motor fell apart (which made for a very nervous last 3 stages), and the gearbox to bellhousing bolts all came undone (discovered just as we were setting off for the last stage).

My 16 year old daughter did a briiliant job on her co-driving debut, and is keen to do some more events next year.

We finished 16th o/all (out of 88 cars), and 5th in class (out of 29 cars, of which 24 finished). The class was won by a touring car engined Darrian, but I was only just over a second/mile slower than the Escort which finished 2nd in our class, so I just need to tidy up my driving and be a little less cautious on the brakes and I'm sure the results will come.

I'm not doing any more events this year as I've run out of money, but Steve should be out in the car at Ty Croes (Anglesey) in November.

Here's some in car footage. I only managed to record one stage, and it's a bit untidy, with an embarrassing spin:

Nice car and very entertaining to watch. Here's a little vid I did from the Prom stages and your car is at 5:15 and again at 9:45.
Sorry for the poor quality but it was taken on a normal camera not a video camera

I will do an event in Ireland one day - it's definitely a dream of mine, but unfortunately the cost of HANS devices, and some of the other things we would need to buy means that it's not going to happen just yet.

Re: MK1 Escort Tarmac Rally Car

                                Time for an update:

My brother did a rally at Ty-Croes in November, but unfortunately it snapped a half shaft.

We have now fitted 2 new half shafts, and had the hubs and flanges machined so that they all match up nicely. This should hopefully cure the oil leaks we were getting on both sides of the axle. We have also fitted a new front panel after the car slipped of the jack and damaged the old one. The new one has some lovely swaged holes for extra cooling, and we've taken the opportunity to changeover to some new 2 piece alloy lamp brackets.

Whilst watching the in car footage from Ty Croes, we noticed the oil light coming on at higher revs!!!! Our engine builder suspected the oil pump pressure relief valve was sticking open, so we have fitted some new parts to it, and also replaced the big end bearings.

I'm going over to the Isle of Man next week to compete on the Chris Kelly Memorial Rally. We've fitted a HID kit to the spotlights, so we'll see how well they work on the Friday night, which has 6 stages in the dark. These are then followed by 12 stages in daylight on the Saturday. I've got a video of the stages being used, and some of them look incredibly quick - I'm not the bravest of drivers on the fast bits, and we're pretty inexperienced with pace notes, so we'll see how we get on.

Hopefully I'll have some in-car footage to post after the rally.
