Re: Jersey E30 rally car rebuild

Well, no real updates on the car although I have been doing the odd job here and there.

Good news is that the welding is now fully completed and Im happy theres no rot.

Bad news is that the sandblasting never materialised, mainly due to the temperamental weather but also because I wasnt 100 sure that everything I wanted doing was done.

Today I knocked up a frame with some 5" castor wheels so that I can get the turd trailored up to the sandbalsters' yard, that way Im not bound by the weather like if he was doing it here. He's also going to etch prime it before I get it back so wont have to worry about rust!

Here's how it stands at the moment, should be handy for when it makes its trip to the paint shop too

Made up new strut tops today for a bit more travel, these top mounts will eventually be replaced with the upside down variety.

Shell came back from the balsters this afternoon. Guy has done an awesome job of it, proper got into all the hard to get places and etch primed it for me aswell. Work is quiet the next couple of weeks so hopefuly I can get it painted inside an underside in that time. Much more motivating now theres no putrid brown on it

Too right, Thats gotta be the best bit about prepping a shell I find, when everythings seales up and got a nicey shiney coat of paint!

Nothing too exciting to report. Been busy prepping it past few days, taking longer than I hoped because the sandblasting process has been hard on the metal. I want a nice job on the bits you can see so I've had to high build primer and flat the engine bay once already just to get the pitting out of the metal, this layer ive done today is hopefully the final coat of primer in the bay depending on how smooth I can get it. Once the bay is prepped it will be spun on its side for the final time and the underside painted.

Stonechipped the wheelarches so they're protected and have bought the paint, went for solid anthracite, hopefully it will look nice when applied.

Last time its on its side hopefully Should be back down tomorrow, then final engine bay prep can start. Once thats painted its onto the inside, then the boot. Not looking forward to painting the cage

In the meantime the crossmember, struts and rear beam will be blasted and I can make a start on getting it rolling

Have also ordered more CDS for my rear arms so need to make jigs for those.

Painted the engine bay this morning,

Flatted with 400 then 600 grit paper.

Layer of wet on wet sealer/tinter to give a deeper shine (1 part colour, 1 part primer, 1 part thinner and 1 part hardener)

And top coat, nice an shiney

Pretty happy with the finish considering it was done in my dusty old workshop. Now to get started on the inside and boot!

Looks very good! You just cant beat a fresh coat of paint. Makes me feel all guilty for not doing this to my car.

Re: Jersey E30 rally car rebuild

Well after 2 days of drama the inside is painted, I primed it at the weekend and all was looking well. Yesterday I started painting it sitting inside the car with a sheet down on the floors, started off well until I got about half way down and sandblasting grit which was stuck inside the sills and other crevices started to blowing out and going all over the place, I carried on in my frustration and shut the garage up without thinking about it too much.

Went back in the morning thinking It'l be fine. However as soon as I looked at it I realised that it looked utter shite and there was no way it was staying like that. 6 hours later the inside had been sanded back and I painted it again after a good session with the compressor blowing out any grit I could find. luckily round 2 was more successful.

Its not amazing but at the end of the day im not a pro, it hasnt cost me anything and its shiny and protected, so I'm 90% happy, which will do
