Interesting reading as always, how about some pics of the interior of your car, As I assume you are running road rally rules I am curious how you manage to fit a carpet with seat rails, brake lines etc and keep it all tidy, thanks
Had a quick look over the car over the Easter weekend and pulled the carb out
Stripped off the floats which were fine and pulled the float needle out and a bit of swarf came out with it.
Unsure if this has been in there a while now and has been causing the float to stick on and off but it gave the carb a good clean out blew through all the fuel lines and found nothing
So I stripped the filter king which was clean. Also stripped the fuel pumps and cleaned the filters out. Next step is to take the tank out and make sure nothing is floating about in there.
Unsure how it got through all the filters if it came from the tank though.
But it runs fine now took it up the road and it seems fine. But it only ever does it when I’m competing
Spent the rest of the day faffing on with a calibra trying to get it to start to no avail. Gave up and just pushed it into the corner where the escort is going to live.
Stu and I then spent an hour shuffling all the other stuff in his garage around so we can fit all the cars including my escort in.
Not sure how we got them all in and even more unsure how we will get them out but that’s a problem for another day.
We then spent a few more hours on his tr7
Stripping the crashed car ready to donate its engine suspension and a few other bits onto the new car.
Interesting working on something different but no wonder they couldnt compete against the escorts everything seems heavy and complicated on them.
But was a nice way to spend a Saturday and got me out of house renovation!
Been quiet on here still plodding on with the house and garage build but thought I’d talk about some other things I’ve been up to. If there’s enough I might start a new thread.
Firstly in Return for storing my mk2 I’m helping my mate reshell his tr7. His original car could have been repaired but we picked up a solid running complete car for less than 1 front wing so the choice was made.
At this point we have both cars stripped the bay has been repaired in a small way on the new one an we are ready to swap the box and engine tonight.
Then I’ve also been busy marshalling and helping on the flying Scotsman vintage rally.
Brilliant event that is the highlight of the year for me. Seeing vintage Bentleys, Aston’s, mgs and various other priceless cars being used properly is just the best. The rally roughly follows the route the flying Scotsman took. It’s made up of navigation sections, regularity sections and then tests.
Two of our club members were out.
My good mate Ali Procter with his usual driver Paul Crosby were out in the rapid supercharged MG TC
This thing drives like a caterham with very little weight and grip and a good bit of power. They ended the rally in fourth place. Problems with the tripmeter plaguing their whole rally.
Also Kate and Sophie Wickham were out in their MG TC
Here’s me looking like I’m trying to leap into their car
They have both only done a few rallies so were amazed to finish 28th which in the company was very good.
Another notable performance was of william Medcalf and Andy Pullan who finished 2nd in their Bentley.
Who knew you could do handbrake turns in nearly two tons of vintage Bentley!!!!
My house is finally finished and the garage is due to start in April once the weather has hopefully improved.
Ali, who has navigated for me a few times is doing the founds and base and then i will be doing the brickwork and roof.
In other matters I went to check on the car and it’s still there
In November I was feeling a bit bored so decided to enter a 12 car in my diesel fiesta road car.
Ali’s wife Lynsey had been talking about giving them ago so I was happy to drive for her. After a bit of training from Ali she knew most of the basics and we had a good run round despite taking a few wrong slots we were quickly back on the route. I also managed to reverse into a hedge but every panel on the car has a dent in it (even the roof it’s had a hard life moon lighting as a van recently) so no new damage was done.
We manage to bounce around the lanes and eventually finished 3rd which we were more than happy with.
Then it was onto December and our annual trip down to the Preston Road rally. Two crews from our club were doing it and despite me trying to sort a car i ran out of time so I was on trailer driving and marshalling duties! My mate josh had managed to prise the proton rally car key off his dad and was having his first go at driving with Chris’s Dodds on the maps. The other crew of James Hastings and Sophie Wickham were also entered in a near identical Proton. Josh and Chris finished 15th overall in 2nd in Class a brilliant result for a first timer
James and Sophie finished 35th but were just happy to survive!
We all had brilliant night even if we all questioned our sanity on Sunday!
Was nice to see Gavin Rodgers out setting a very quick pace in Fly.
Hopefully the event will run again but the main organisers have stepped down so it seems unlikely.
Still no garage building but have been messing with something else whilst I’m waiting!
This little beauty is on loan to me at the minute
It was my friends spare car but the original car, a blue enduro spec proton got written off, so he asked me if I would rebuild it for him into this car.
Enduro cars had a very simple spec this is been built to use on targas and road rallies. It’s a standard 1.3 only upgrade is an induction kit. I fitted the cage sump guard harness and spotlights. Just had it motd and going to use of on a few events to get it dialled in.
These are really underrated cars they handle very well as standard only other upgrade is some bigger brakes and calipers.
The main reason for borrowing the white wonder was I need a course car for our big event The John Robson/Hexham Historic Road rally.
For the past three years a new team was asked to take over the running of the rally after the previous running had fallen below a decent standard and struggled for entries. In 2016 the current team took over and I was asked to help last year driving the course car.
This year I was asked to be properly involved and took over chief marshal role as well as other roles along the way. Along with my regular navigator Josh as my deputy.
The event went well last year with a strong entry but we hoped to right some mistakes that were made and to improve on the event once again.
With no road rallying taking place in the north east we knew if we could get a good route and organise it well we could make it into one of the ‘must do’ events.
This all started in October last year with lots of planning and organising we had a superb route sorted with minimal changes to be made. Interest was brimming and we had a full entry of 50 plus reserves. We then got permission from the MSA to extend the entry so 57 started the event with 13 Historics.
We were overwhelmed with marshals some coming as far as north wales to help out!
Competitors had come from far and wide so all we had to do was deal with any problems on the night.
Aside to all this I was rebuilding the white proton as my mk2 wasn’t anywhere near ready. It being a standard 1.3 it was going to be a challenge keeping the main field behind me and we just hoped for no problems.
Based just outside of Corbridge at Brockbushes Garden centre we left at 9 pm with a short run out to the first section.
Here we met the clock car who was waiting to go ahead . He would act as a course car to wake the marshals up and we were car ‘0’ as one final check and also we would be a control competitor. If we found a control board then all the others should.
First section was from the start marshal 200m not as map hairpin left
There’s was a good mix of competitive sections with short transport sections heading from Corbridge down to Allanheads then a transport section down to Durham for the last two competitive sections before petrol at Mickleton on tees. These two sections have largely been unused in a number of years. They were very challenging with lots of yumps and blind crests. Even after all the times going over it I was still struggling to remember it. We only had one heavy landing but got away unscathed. After this we headed to petrol which was run by local stage rallying regular at his garage complete with homemade cakes and tea and coffee. Also his staff came and filled the cars up so we could get a bite.
Unfortunately the protons filler neck had gotten damaged so started to leak which we managed to bodge up.
After this it the event headed to the top of hamsterly forest for the regroup.
It was good to have a chat with the competitors who all seemed to be enjoying the route.
We headed off on the next competing section but the fan belt started to squeal. We managed to get through the section but had to go on to side lights to stop the car from misfiring.
At the end of the section we jumped out and managed to swap the fan belt and carry on.
We got to start of the next section to see car one had already started so we cut and run to the start of the next.
Luckily this section had lots of experienced marshals on so wasn’t a problem.
We then carried on to the end of the event without any problems to set up the last section which turned off the road into the Garden centre itself through a very narrow tunnel to a hairpin right and over the finish of the section and the event.
It all went well despite the car issues but I wish I’d been out in the escort! Fwd really doesn’t suit me.
The event was won by my good friend Richard Hunter with Iain Tullie on the maps.
After the prize giving I went to to drive home and got 1/2 a mile before the fan belt snapped so waited for it to get light then limped home!
Planning has already started for next years event!
They are a very underrated car but compared to a lot of cars you wouldn’t want to drive one everyday
They are very cheap inside
Rust just like a mk2 and the proton name doesn’t exactly do it for many people
