£2000 + shipping + taxes. Thats not too bad.

Payback is reasonable when you consider there are lots of people over on passionfight that will happily pay £500 for light headwork from companies that have never had a head near a flow bench and wouldn't know how to spell the word development.

does it go on the car or is it a tool.....
if its a tool then is it to hold down rubber bungs for
pressure testing?

if it goes on the car? sommat to do with the throttle?

a clue....

its a tool of sorts, although it bolts to part of the engine, it wont be a part of the finished artical

As there are 4 bolts I'd guess that there's one for each cylinder but other than that I've no idea

something like this so when i get round to flow testing heads we can open the valves by known amounts, handily it also give somehere the magnetic base ofthe DTI will attach to, which is always an issue on alloy heads

we will see, i can build all manor of things and get very inventive but an excel graph might be beyond me!

i did a bit more on the exhaust manifold front, piece of 10mm thick steel plate and these



made these



and with a bit of heating and bending and a bit of trimming with the angle grinder and hey presto, one ashley pinto 3 piece manifold on a bmw engine



well nearly the bottom bit will need radically reworking, the whole thing gets very close to the steering column but it clears-just.
i used a spare head to mig it 90% together, i will fill in the gaps later

Won't that be a pain to get in and out, or does the steering knuckle come off easy?

being a 3 piece manifold that comes to bits it just squeezes around the knuckle, of corese it might not once ive put the y piece back on branches 1+4.

i might knock up a slimmer column, either way its going to be a walk in the park compaired to the turbo manifolding

i've been umming and arrring for a while about the induction system, theres no question it will be on throttle bodies, i thought about adaptor plates so i could use the 48mm bmw ones i already had, they are a touch on the heavy side and there isnt a manifold to fit them to the 8v head and factory 48mm bodies fetch quite a lot of money, so i then thought about buying some jenveys, oh why did i sell the pair i used to have but realised although i could buy an off the shelf inlet manifold, it would need radically reworking, off the shelf manifolds have a 30 degree bend in them to suit sidedrafts, i proved in a previous life, that sawing up the manifold and welding it backtogether without the bend was worth 10bhp, so i'd be buying a manfold and cutting it up, and if i end up using the small port head i would have real issues because the ports are totally different shapes so i'd have to spend loads of dosh having the manifold welded up internally also, after much pondering and reluctance to modify the origonal bmw bodies i decided it that was the only sensable option, and a cheap one at that, not only were they free but come with a really well engineered linkage which properly works with the pedal setup



i managed to nab a big lump of alloy off a local engineering company as the basis of a manifold/adaptor plate



after some marking out and drilling it fitted the head/manifold studs




the alloy could do with being a fraction wider, but was just barely wide enough, the top side will be retained by allen cap screws, so i needed to drill a recessin some of the bolt holes the allen bolts were below the surface that the bodies will bolt on, i normally sharpen a drill so that it has a flat cutting tip to do this, but as the holes will break into thin air i knew that wouldnt work the drill would just wander, or more likely bend and break not having a suitable bit or tool holder and cutting tip for the milling machine either it took me a long while to find a solution, i reshaped a wood boring bit, it did a great job too
