    Re: My Mk1 Fiesta XR2

Gearbox mount arrived this week, and I've almost finished the mounting bracket for it in 3mm steel.

Loved the Legacy 2.0D Sports Tourer. Not so keen on the Outback model, looks a bit like a Chelsea tractor, but the standard Legacy is very nice. Tempted...

        Re: My Mk1 Fiesta XR2

Here are pictures of the bracket made from 3mm steel.

I'm planning on making the bracket removable, allowing it to bolt up to the 3 holes in the reinforced inner wing, that the original XR2 gearbox mounting bracket uses. So the plan is to make a plate which sits upright, and bolts to the inner wing, and I'll weld the plate you see in this picture to the upright plate. I'll then make some webs which will be welded in place to keep the horizontal bracket horizontal.

And the other news is I bought a Subaru Legacy RE 2.0 Diesel Sports Tourer today. Delivery next week. This will be the tow car for the next few years. Diamond Grey metallic with black leather.

          Re: My Mk1 Fiesta XR2

Bracket is almost complete. Just need to brace the horizontal plate. Used the MIG today for the first time in about 2 years. Great fun.

The idea is that it is removable, so I'll get it powder coated once complete.

Graham, I know it not finished yetm but will you be trimming the 3mm plate back to the alloy plate, as 3mm versus skin and bone, the 3mm plate wins most times.

swexy looking bracket and mount though

Yes, once I'm happy with the range of movement and the engine/box are sat in the right place, the extra metal on the end of the horizontal plate will be trimmed right back to save weight.

Bracket trimmed, and strengthened with right angled plate on the front edge. Just need to add some bracing to the rear of the bracket, and she's finished.

Finished the bracket off tonight. Tomorrow I'll bolt it all up, and let the chassis take the weight of the engine and box for the first time.

With the floor clear, I raised the car on the trolley jack, removed the engine trolly, and lowered the car back. No creaks or groans, and the engine sits perfectly in the bay, with a nice tilt backwards.
