When the Scrut came he was confident that it would fly through, it's been 3 weeks now and Iv since had to send another photo as one wasn't clear enough. Still waiting to here the outcome......
Not a bad start to the year, we fetched the car home in 11oa and 4th in class (once again), couldn't have asked for a better day it was bone dry all day and the car ran faultless! the extra power and the gearbox felt great but unfortunately it still isn't enough to help us climb that leaderboard!
The main reason for the upgrade is because I broke the box twice last year, broken mainshaft in one event then a broken synchro (brand new synchro I must add) on the next event. The box only being a Tranx is rated to about 200 horse so it was almost at its max, and now with the extra power it would be well over the max. Also I needed to alter the gearing on the car, with the engine having good amounts of torque low down all it wanted to do was wheel spin, Iv now gone for a 2.0 first gear from a 2.4 hoping this will help the car off the line ect...
I have the tran x syncro box and it can't take the power of my engine. I break a synco or two rvery time i use the thing! So i am going to use an rx8 that has ratios very similar to the tran x sith the /.4 1st gear too eith out the expence of the dog box.
The second event of the year was the Dixies historic challenge on epynt, this was the first time this event had run using similar stages to the mini epynt stages. This was both mine and mikes first time up there!
The weather couldn't really have been any worse for us, thick fog and rain all morning and day until mid afternoon then it started to clear up.
We had a good start to the day after the first loop of 2 stages we were in the top 10, then after the next 2 stages we found ourselves in 4th overall and 1st in class. But then the gremlins crept in and we managed to snap a rear caliper off taking the brake line with it! Luckily it happened where it did as it could have been much worse, after loosing a lot of time on the side of the road we decided to put the bias box to the front brakes and crawl out of the stage and do the next then get back to service, in service we clamped off the rear hose, bled the other caliper back up and finished the last 2 stages, the damage was done from getting a stage max when it happened but we still managed 22 overall and 2nd in class.
Last weekend was our second visit to the epynt ranges for the Harry Flatters rally. One of the big events up there that saw 120 starters. The event lay out was changed a little and it was split of over 5 15 mile stages. The field was a mix of modern and historic cars, including Jimmy McRae who was seeded just 2 cars ahead of us. We were seeded car 47 which I was a little nervous about really, having crews behind us with more power and more experience of the place and for anyone who knows about epynt. Experience up there is priceless.
Saturday was a long day, reccying in the morning and then having the car scrutineered in the afternoon, the weather was great but it wasn't to last, it has given heavy rain for the Sunday. Sunday arrived and the weather report was correct, from about 7 o clock the rain didn't ease off until the end of the day. It made our second visit there a bit sketchy, having only used approx 5 miles of these 15mile stages before but there was nothing to dramatic and we finished 20th overall and 4th in class.
It's been a busy few weeks on the car, Iv put a set of arches on the rear now so we can finally get some decent size wheels under it, im also in the process of wide tracking the front end to match the rear. The gearbox is away being checked over, clutch plates re-lined and then off to set the suspension up ahead of our next outing which is the Pokerstars rally in november in the Isle of Man.
