    Re: Moggy's Darrian T9

Quick update as I haven't been back here for a while.

We are onto a new development of the engine which will see more power and torque again to keep things interesting. This will be in the car for the next event. We are also fitting a small electric pump (Cosworth WRC diff pump) and a cooler system to the gearbox as we have had various problems due to it getting too hot..........hopefully this cures it once and for all.

The next two rallies run night stages so have finally sorted the lamp pod out...........a great job by Magnum Motorsport.........who by the way do loads of fibreglass and carbon stuff for escorts.

Next event for us is Glyn stages on Anglesey 6/7 November and then Rockingham at the begining of December......anybody else comming out to play on these?

Same for me , made the thing a lot easier than the guys who'd only done "ordinary" stage rallying .

My brother's doing the Glyn Stages, and we're going to convert our main spot lights over to HID units. Which light colour number are you using in your HIDS?

Hopefully I'll get chance to come over and have a look around your car.

Yes come and say hello. Just 100watt H1's in mine at the moment.

Main task is get engine done and set up in time for the rally, should be ok.

Very good read, heard lots about this off Jon.

Didn't you have a big problem in your last event?

Jon's new engine proved way too powerful for the crappy flywheel we fitted to it. It exploded taking with it the back of the engine block, bellhousing, clutch, sumpguard, rear brakes and most of the rear subframe.

On a brighter note, the performance was brilliant...............we will be ready for the start of next season.......car ism much quicker now.

Saw a few pics, looked nasty. Aren't you running SS6's now?

I have a forged SS5'd engine which is quite impressive and wouldn't mind changing to some 6's next year.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck.

Hi Mate......Darrian is getting there now thanks......had quite a big delay with the winter rebuild as I got sick back in Africa and ended up in hospital over there for a week over Christmas. I am basically fit now so it is all full steam ahead.

The car was last used in November and the flywheel exploded taking out the rear subframe, block, bellhousing, input shaft, wiring loom, brake/clucth lines, rear bodywork etc as well as lots of other stuff.

Car is now fully painted (different colours).........and has modifications to the rear bodywork to help shed the heat build up by creating low pressure to pull air in and then escape.

New belhousing is made as is clutch (new twin plate type) and new salve cylinder.

gearbox is rebuilt (same spec as before)

New engine (same spec I think) is built.

We installed the engine, gearbox and subframe last night and plumbed it all in.

We will run the engine this week.

If all is well and I get time to run it in then we will be competing at the end of March.

                        Watch this space!

Glad to hear you're now all better. Sounds scary when you say you got something from Africa....

Quite a task to mend all the damage the god damn flywheel caused.

Any piscs of the new colour?

It was pneumonia. No idea why it came to me.......but bad and with some other complications.......anyway mostly better now.

Car will be outside soon so I can photograph it for the MSA logbook so I will put some up then.

I cannot comprehend the damage the flywheel did.............if it had been an escort the consequences would have been far more serious.........my T45 tubular subframe it cut through is far stronger than the sheet steel of a transmition tunnel.............if it decides to let go at best part of 9000rpm not much is going to stop it.........pnemonia would have been the least of my worries.

Tell Jon to use HD bolts and perhaps double dowell the new fly. This one was solid steel right?

                                Re: Moggy's Darrian T9

We used the car for the first time this year at the weekend on the excellent Lee Holland Rally on Anglesey.

It was great to be back in the car after such a long break and the weather was great if a little cold. There was some fantastic cars on the event including mega escorts with Duratec/Tractive combination as well as an ex-works WRC Focus and Escort Cosworth.

We had troubles all day with a gearbox which kept sticking in gear and this cost us a lot of time when it stuck in 4th going into a chicane.....I promptly stalled it and then it wouldn't restart.........it was stopped for 45 seconds until the marshalls arrived and bump started it.

2nd in class was the final result. The 1600 Shawspeed engine was very good indeed and didn't miss a beat all day. The car came home unscathed and just needs some modification to the gearbox actuator as well as a new starter motor then it's ready to go again.

This was the last stage...........plenty of splits and merges to keep it interesting.
