Custom Cages .... custom because no 2 are alike ..
your not wrong gary, the front section kinda fitted, even if the screen bar was about an inch and half too long. but the rear section err, well, the best thing i can say is non of the tubes are too short! still too long is better than too short, since i took that pic ive spent a couple of hours juggling tubes and an not a step closer to actually welding any more in.
I did a 3dr ... interesting how the want the diagonals in before you fit the backstays .. I gave up and fitted it how I had fitted every cage previously..
a few pics ive nicked off daves facebook page, cage is 95% done, as is the diff brace, we had to massage just one spot of floor in order to get the seat further over towards the middle of the car, it make the wheel central to the seat now but we actually did it to stop his head resting on the B pillar to hoop brace
Thanks for posting the pics Graham, I couldnt get it working on my pc. It really is starting to look like a car now
As Graham says we have done a quick mock up of the seating position in order to know that the seat and obp pedal box would go in and give me a reasonable seating position.
The tunnel did receive a light 'massage' with Graham on the gas axe and myself with a BFH as there is a large part of exhaust tunnel right in the front corner where the seat wanted to be. This also brought the seat closer to the tunnel, much nicer as a driving position as well as meaning my head wont be an integral part of the cage.
The cage looks great now, only two 'extra' bars left to go in, but I was particularly impressed with the rear diff/ strut tower brace. Just a pity it wont be seen once the firewall and fuel tank go in
Hopefully not too long now before she can go to get a coat of paint prior to final assembly

Good stuff Dave , are you hoping to be out next season ?
Hopefully yes Jezza, as long as it gets paint in time as assembly shouldn't be too different from the 3 door, As long as I can resist not making too many changes that is!

the roll cage has caused issues with the rear doors, because it stops you getting access to the hinge studs, after some head scratching i worked out i could remove the studs from the door hinges, and fit them to the spreader places that go in the pillar and weld the spreader plate to the body that way the nuts go back on the outside not the inside of the pillar, with an unexpected bonus, rear door removal can now be done in seconds
seat mounts are now in, that was tricky too, bacause dave is quite tall the seat needs to be mounted low, which didnt leave enough room between the B pillar triangulation and his head, with a bit of massaging and custom seat mounts the seat now goes far enough over to give his head clearance, and as another bonus the steering wheel central to the driver
lastly for now the vertical part of the firewall is done
Not too much fab left now, need to get a few lightweight panels sourced and start thinking about getting it in the paintshop. Also looking for a new fuel tank as my 7 gal one might be a bit marginal for the future, looking 9 or 10 gals just to be on the safe side and boot floor mounted..

Been up to see Graham, progress is continuing although a certain supplier is really messing us about and has probably lost us two months on this build! Still all is good at Penguin motors and Graham has completed the main cage, firewall, rear shelf and seat mounts
Not just cars with broken oil burners in the garage, 3 different marque race cars to spice things up (if not actually pay the bills!)
