    Stylussprinter's Stylus

    Posted on behalf of Stylussprinter.

"My car is an SSC STYLUS which I completed in 1999 . Did a hillclimb school day at Gurston which was brilliant apart from me messing up after 5 runs. There were about 25 of us and apparently '' some '' marshals/instructors ??? were betting on which of two would come off first --- afraid it was me , buggering up the right front wishbone in the process . This one day is what launched me into motorsport --- I just couldn't get the day out of my head ----- wishbone replaced , then I started getting serious !
Engine is a 2lt zetec which I built with Dunnell head, cams, verniers, engine mgt. Sump, flywheel, clutch, rod bolts from Raceline. It runs on Weber 45DCOE's and is turning out 170bhp @ the wheels. Apart from re-jetting , changing chokes to 40's from 36's at first build and fitting full radius trumpets , the engine is the same now as in 1999.
    Gearbox is Quaife 2.04 , 1.54 , 1.21 , 1.0 and 5th unknown but think 0.87
Diff' in the live Escort is 4.4 ATB in an alloy casing.
Up front is an all Raceleda set up since 2005.ALLOY everything supported all round on National rod ends.Original spec' was EscortM2 struts/cut. Just recently fitted an anti-rollbar to the front developed by SSC and tested by me. The rear suspension is all supported by polybushes in it's 2 leading/ 2 trailing links plus panhard.
Over a period of 4 yrs the car has been lowered involving some major component changes plus body mod's .
AVO steel single adj' coilovers were 13 inch all round in 1999 with 180lbs front 130lbs rear .
Now Trakspax alloy DA 10 inch with 285lbs 7 inch coils FRONT & AVO alloy DA 14 inch with 250lbs 8 inch coils REAR.(concave trailing links to allow for 14 inch sh.)
Exhaust moved from under chassis to side exit and all equal primaries.
    Wheels/tyres changed from 14x6 plus 185x60's
    TO -- 15x7 plus 205x50's Compomotive ML
Wheel arches cut/flared to take new wheels and lowered chassis.
Front track now measures 40mm wider with RACELEDA uprights supported on new wishbones/rod ends.

Having done this in several stages the car has got quicker at each move which was pleasing. After the hillclimb school I joined BARC SW thinking I'd hillclimb the car but unless you entered via another group with it's own reg's it wasn't possible to get into the class I wanted. Only sports libre was available where I'd be outclassed.
SO --- I entered the ACSMC Speed championship and have had fun in that from 2002 to date.
    OVERALL BEST NOVICE 2002
    2nd in class championship 2003
    1st in class championship 2004
    2nd in class championship 2005
No championship entered in 2006 just did two test days and entered TWMC TON HIRE sprint at Goodwood 1st July(in sports libre as no tax/ins etc) 1st in class -- first ever at Goodwood so dead chuffed

Entered into Brighton Speed Trials next week also in sports libre so am expecting to get blown away. 36 entries in the class and mostly 6.3's and 5.7's etc , you get the picture"

Did a 13.38 and 102 terminal at Brighton . More grunt coming out of it by this winters end so hope to beat my 91sec's personal best Goodwood lap in 2007
Changing cams again plus a little more headwork , bigger valves , comp'n springs and throttle bodies. Just hope the box and axle stands up to it.

                    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

A few things have happened since last post on here. In 2008 I managed to hit a tree on the very last event of the season. The manufacturer has ceased opperating but he did get a half body moulded up for me after 6 mths waiting. Having the wheel and suspension come up through the front right wing , broke most suspension bits plus radiator so decided not to just repair and bond it on but make the whole front end hinge forward. Made my own hinge system because the manufacturers design wouldn't allow it to open without fouling the ground and only being half open.
After a lot of work and a half body respray plus rearranging the air intake and radiator , I got it ready to enter the TWMC TONHIRE Goodwood sprint on the 27th June 2009 . Won it in some style against 5 other entries for sports libre . The best two cars , I'd assumed would put me into 3rd at very best , having not sat in the car since the 2008 crash on track. One was an Escort M1 space frame/coil over sus 'n , weighing 625kgs and sporting 260bhp plus running slicks. The other even scarier car was a GTD40 with 500bhp plus also running slicks .
At the end of the day I beat the GTD40 by 1.3 sec's and the Escort by 10 sec's over a standing start two lap sprint. My Stylus runs Toyo R888's and weighs 609 kgs with 231bhp (2lt ZETEC on Dunnell TB's , cams , valves etc -- since last post when on 45's with 200bhp)
I followed that with an entry into the Brighton and Hove Goodwood sprint on August 1st 2009 ---------------------- it just absolutely pissed down and against all odds I won that too and with a rediculous margin ---- my first ever wet win , cars were flying off the track in all classes . My time was my slowest ever at 118 sec's for the single standing start lap .

Didn't enter any more events till April 24th 2010 at Goodwood. I won that too and against the main rival of the Escort space frame . My time was 97.8 sec's , his around 7 sec's slower . My most recent event was last weekend also at Goodwood for the first ever sprint organised by the CTCRC and sure enough the Escort was there too , this time I was even quicker at 95.48 sec's which beat his time again , although he also was quicker than last time.
Next event is at the Abingdon Motorsport Carnival on the 12th of June . This will be a lot tougher competition with the best sports libre cars from all over the country so am not expecting to be a winner here . Top 3 would be nice.

Got pic's of repaired car plus engine shots but can't upload on here . I'm used to uploading via a browser to '' my pictures '' on the PC so stuffed

Ahh ha..your back, thought you had got lost to the ' Global Downturn ' ...

Bad luck on the crash, and well done on the results so far this year, looks like the crash may have done some good (every cloud etc )

As for the pictures, at the top of the page, under the sponsors banners, theres a few tabs starting on the left hand side, the last one says ' uploader '
click that and it opens a new page, shows ten 'browse' boxes, click browse and loacte your pictures, double click a pic to enter into the first box, click browse on the second box, and double click teh next picture.. repeat for all pictures (upto 10) and click ' upload ' on that page,
the page refreshes and shows the codes for the pics, highlight all the codes, right click and copy.
On the forum, click '+reply to thread' and type some words, ie 'here are some pics' then paste the codes into the reply box, after the codes are there, click 'post reply'

                      look forward to seeing them

                        Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

                        The pics ..

1)flip open after repairs showing my kevlar engine guards cut from second hand floor panels and gold heat reflector over heat mat , curticy of a friend in F1.

2)2008 Abingdon chicane with engine upgrade but still sporting a one piece body.

3)upgraded engine just collected from Paul Dunnell . This is my original block and head that ran on 45's until 2006

4)shutting edge being made up after my tree shunt ready for a new hinged flip designed front end.

5)small bonnet bonded in to the cut and shut new half body made by Tim Duffee just 2mm's thick. Carbon fibre strengtheners needed to prevent it flapping around.

6)originally the body shell sat higher on the road so had smaller arches. My modded car at 90mm's front chassis height needed the arches cut out 35mm's and flared 40mm's to just cover the wheels , hence the holes to help bonding.

space framed Escort trying hard to beat my time , exiting Goodwood's chicane. 15th May 2010.

8)me trying to make sure he doesn't and lifting the inside front.

9)exiting Goodwood's chicane for my first ever wet win in 2009.

10)upgraded engine installed before body damage with own made airbox fitted to house 115mm's trumpets.Air pipe 100mm's to grill filter.

11)kevlar flare overlapping inside and filled to give extra support.

12)looking very poorly at home after the tree incident.

13)fettling for a tidy shutting edge and air vents cut out.

                        14)ready to paint now.

15)outside for a wash before trailering to paint.

16)front cut off approximately for easier suspension repairs. Exact cut when the body arrives.

17)suspension repaired plus all new rodends for safety. Hinge and radiator yet to be done.

18)Tim Benbow SSC Stylus manufacturer making the first cut . I'd already designed the hinge system to allow full opening before the body came .You can see he's in thinking mode ---- think twice --- cut once .

Many thanks for all this . Rob
PS. I came 26th out of 150 entries across all classes at Abingdon on the 12th June and 5th out of 8 entries in my class/sports libre. Ist was a JUNO 250bhp on slicks , 2nd a DARRION 300bhp on slicks , 3rd a WESTFIELD twin rotary engine on slicks , 4th (beating me by 1/10th sec) an MGV8 3.6lt on slicks , 5th -STYLUS 231bhp(me)on Toyo R888's , 6th an MG 6R4 on slicks , 7th an ANGLIA 2lt xe 230bhp on slicks , 8th an EVO ??? on slicks.
There are two courses , one coned out point and squirt , the other more of a half Goodwood style course and both your fastest times are added together from each course to arrive at your position in class and overall .
