    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

I've spent a bit of time analysing how the car behaved after fitting the suspension brace , also looking at the front tyre wear regarding the rubber that normally rolls off the whole surface with my previous set-up. Obviously the towers were moving before for that to happen because having got it home and looked carefully at the front treads , particularly the left front , only the centre to outside edge is rubbered or rolling off. So camber/castor were increasing during weight transfer/cornering which can only happen with tower movement.

With that in mind , I've adjusted camber , rake and toe to get back the balance I had before and some extra rear grip with lessening the rake . She was running 2deg neg camber , now 2.7deg neg and dropped the rear coilovers just half a turn to 21mm's rake , previously 23mm's. Toe was 2mm's toe in overall , now it's 1.5mm's toe in .

All I need now is some tracktime to see if my analysis was right

ID:	2000866Motorsport-events are having an open pitlane trackday at Abingdon on the 20th July , so having just tinkered with my set-up , I may go on this one just to see what she feels like .

I didn't know about Prescott's RWYB hillclimb day on the 19th August but having read what you guys were doing for it , I asked to be included. However , after telling the organisers that my car has only got an MSA log book and not road going , he asked if I'd like a stand for Stylus's !!! Answer was obviously YES !
So a stand for 10 cars at present for our club as opposed to the manufacturer in the name of --- CLUB STYLUS . I bought an extendable flagpole for £5-99p and a flag for the same then a very kind lady in the village stitched some red letters onto it for me .
If you hadn't heard of Stylus's before I posted on here , a year or so back and go to Prescott on 19th August ---- you will then

I didn't go to Abingdon Motorsport-events trackday with the Stylus so have entered the B&HMC Goodwood sprint on the 4th of August. What a class line-up though !!!
        My Stylus 2lt 231bhp
        Escort spaceframe 2lt 280bhp
        Cortina 5.7lt ---- bhp ??
        Ultima Cantrac 4.4lt ----- bhp ??
RX7 6.3lt race tuned ----- this guy beat me last time by 5 sec's !!!! Andy Embling , ex - motorbike racer apparently .

          Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

A really good day after a very wet start at the B&HMC EAGLE Sprint. Beat all but the big beast of Andy Embling which he now tells me is actually 6.7lts and over 600bhp .
Anyway my wet/damp practice double lap was 174.06 sec's which I don't believe is correct --- otherwise I'd be doing an 87sec's lap which I've NEVER done. The standing start part of that was 98.29 sec's which proves my point ie. flying lap would have to be 76 sec's !!!! NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. That's single seater lap time.

It dried out nicely later and my first timed run was 94.64 sec's . At this point I was leading the class , including Andy Embling's beast . This really fired me up and my last run was a 93.84 sec's which I thought might just secure me the win but Andy then popped in a 93.39 sec's --- can't beat cubic centremetres aye , so 2nd in class again .

Getting that close to Andy's monster(0.45sec's) was almost as good as being first against lesser beasts --- last time we met he was 91 sec's and me 96 sec's .
If I could find some pro race 1.2 wheels cheap and put some slicks or avon zzr's on , I might possibly get him next time The wheels/tyres I run now weigh 17 kgs a piece .

Compomotive ML 7 x 15 ET15 . I could go to ET10 at the front just and ET ZERO at the rear or even an 8 inch rim .
Another possibilty would be to go to 13's (much lighter) but using 60 profile (slightly mess about with my gearing though for top end ? Swings and roundabouts as usual ---- lower chassis height with 13's/lower top speed.

                    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

I entered N Weald sprint in Sept but got beaten by a 450bhp 4 wheel drive TIGER kit car --- that was balistic quick . Also there was a 4 wheel drive Escort Cosworth with unknown bhp but had launch control ---- it just stood there on the line , lifted rev's to sky high then shot off like a bullet !!!
So that put me in 3rd .
Then I fancied a sprint at Castle Combe , having been there on a charity day with my son in his MGF160BHP Trophy . Really enjoyed the circuit so looked up on our/FDMC/ACSMC championships to see if it was on their list --- it was , on the 28th October So sent off for an entry and there was 7 weeks to go before the date ---------- already had 12 reserves and most places were filled in JULY , AUGUST !!!!!!
So that was the end of my season -- bit disappointed not to be trying out Castle Combe for the first time ever.
Anyway bought myself a used MUREX 186C MIG and small pillar drill , so having fun in off season but need to off load a 50lt gas cylinder for a few quid --- way too big for me and nobody will fill it either

                      Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

A guy from Italy found me on this forum a while back and sent me a PM regarding me making him a front ARB kit for his Striker (Hello Andrea if you're watching/lurking) So my new MUREX got used making up a few bits and bobs recently. Rodended wishbones , ARB , Rocking arms also rear trailing links for fitting greater travel shocks --- all on SYLVA derived cars . I am still amazed at the internet's ability to bring all people into one '' village '' so to speak ---- I've made suspension bits for guys in the Belgium , Malaysia and now Italy --- how do they find me Click image for larger version

The major problem for other Stylus owners is that the factory has ceased trading in 2007 , so no spares available . Having said that , the bits I've made over the last few years have been developed from my competition Stylus . Also , because SYLVA AUTOKITS designed many models with similar chassis then sold off the building rights to other manufacturers ----- there's more than just Stylus's I can make bits for.
With the top rocking arms of Stylus front suspension , I make them much lighter/tubular and fit rodends or spherical bearings/developing now , on the outer arm to upright/preferably ally billet.
Then to match those I can make lower wishbones , rodended and in CDS 16 gauge . With these comes adjustability/previously bushes.
The ARB/front that I designed and make helps prevent rear driven wheel lift and front grip on 'turn in' ------ but without the need to remove the radiator/steering rack/wishbones for ARB link welding.
The rear lower links on the photo make it possible to fit longer shocks , giving more piston travel and still lower the car with the right spring length. The standard link was originally straight too but with the shock mount welded on top of the tube/50mm higher . The factory offered a lowering/longer shock fitment link , by bending roundtube/non CDS then welding the shock mount in the '' dip '' created by bending. I found this very difficult to repeat accurately in a pair without really good pipe bending gear ----- hence my solution in the photo of 30x30x2.5mm box , split apart to allow the shock to sit 50mm lower between two 3mm side plates.
Not as pretty as the manufacturer's design but simpler for me to make with just ''ordinary tools in shed'' gear , as opposed to a real workshop.
Also all the above were easier for me to make up jigs for. Having some success with my own car has brought the contacts I think , just forums chat really and word of mouth. Helps pay my own competition expenses

Just made these for a twin rotary engined Stylus sporting over 400bhp to propel it's 600kgs !
The black one's are what came off the car --- one as you can see was bent just near the upright joint. I wasn't mad keen on their design either , threaded inserts simply butt welded onto small tube ?Click image for larger version

Sadly YES , I wanted to compete from the age of 10 having been taken to Goodwood and seen Fanjio hit the Chicane which was then a brick structure I believe . Should have put me off but at that age it just seemed exciting. Then at 14yrs I bought an AUSTIN 7 for £7-50 (or £7 & 10 shillings as it then was) . Father was a farmer and didn't want me to get into it but my uncle was ex --- REME and he directed me as I stripped it bit by bit . He then took the crank , pistons , rods off to VOSPERS for rebuild while showing me what to do with the head and valves . Once the bits were back , he watched and instructed me putting it all back together. That was my only training but I've never forgotten what he said '' all engines are the same , doesn't matter if it's just a one piston lawn mower or the Queen Mary , they are all basically the same '' . I thought the Queen Mary was steam but suppose he was just making a point.
I then started taking everything off the chassis to use it as a base for building a HAMBLIN kit car circa 1958 with a view to racing it. Uncle lived 90 miles away so I never completed it but sold the prepared chassis/engine/box to an AUSTIN 7 restorer .
Then age 53yrs I saw the STYLUS kit in a magazine which co-incided with ''MR BLAIR'' taking 20% off pension credits for the self employed ------- that was it , I immediately stopped putting money into my pension and bought the chassis !!!
If I can compete , anyone can
