really like this mate, got a few touches i'd love to work into my mk4

where are you getting the headlight lenses done? would they be interested in doing a mk4 set?

what have you done about the standard fuel tank breather system? there's a lot of crap associated with it incl the pipe that goes to the inlet.

how easy it it to make a wiring loom like that? i've still got my standard clocks, central locking and electric windows, i assume there'd be a way i could get these to continue to work? as i've still got the standard ecu in situ, and have just kind of hacked into it for my omex.

Re: Ford Fiesta 1400cc race car

Lenses are being done by Sarik Vacform Ive yet to get a quote yet though, will know more later this week.

I ran a standard fuel tank setup for the first year of racing, just with the vent valve fitted on the breather as required by msa regs. The ecu operated shut off valve and return to the inlet were removed.

I had a custom aluminium foam filled baffled tank made for this year though, not that I had any issues with fuel surge with the standard tank, but its much smaller and lighter than the standard one.

Ive done alot of wiring at work, and my apprenticeship was very electrically baised, so designing and making the wiring loom for my car was pretty simple for me.

Picked up a new drivers door on Saturday, which was stripped and lightened on sunday.

Filler work was finished last week, and Neil came over on Saturday to mask it up and get some etch and some white primer on it. This now needs flatting, then the shell is ready to be shipped off to the bodyshop for paint on friday. All the other panels will be prepped this week, but likely to be painted at a later date as and when I need to fit them back on.

Its getting a paint job very similar to that hillclimb focus that was in performance ford a few months back.

cheers, you got any pics of the original tank / vent thing?

how much i can actually remove?

as for the loom, i guess i just need to sit there with a spare loom and just cut everything out and start again

Right, shell is painted now! As are the skirts and the boot hatch. Well chuffed with the results, owe a few people for the expert help though!

After a coat of white primer and a few coats of Ford Frozen White it was masked up for the the Performance Blue base.

              Few coats of Performance blue:

Few layers of laquer and a bake, then it was wet sanded and given a quick buff.

So its back home now, masking off. Need to crack on with the inside, underneith and inner arches now . .

Bonnet is prepped for paint, doors front wings and bumpers need to be done yet.

I started learning Solidworks on monday, picked up the basics quite quickly, but I am still learning a hell of alot every time I use it!

I had a play today modeling the rear FRP setup.

After my GCSE's I did my A-Levels at 6th form, then I went straight into a 4 year Engineering Apprenticehip in the semiconductor industry, with NVQ's done in the workplace and I did a foundation degree in Mechatronics (Mechainical and Electrical Engineering) day release at college.

Ive never done any motorsport or car related courses.

Im lucky that I have been able to get copies of AutoCAD and Solidworks through college and work, but its very much self taught.

so the apprenticeship you did covers a lot of bases then dosent it ? which is good i guess because it opens up a lot of doors, but what sort of other stuff do you cover besides the car stuff?
ahh okays, cool .. if you dont mind me asking, what do you do for work ?or are you still doing the apprenticeship?

                      thanks for your help

Im still on my apprenticship last 6 months of the 4 years. I have been lucky to be involved my many different aspects of what happens is our factory, with long placements in lots of the sections, and I have gained experience in many jobs, and very much multi-skilled.

From mechanical fitter, electrical sub-assembly build (wiring looms etc), control box wiring (panel wiring), sub assy test, final test, and now im getting more involved in the engineering side, currently learning the aspects of a draftsman.

Been busy on the Solidworks again, this time I have modelled up the AP rotors I hope to use.

I managed to get hold of a model of the caliper I am using from AP so I can model the caliper mounts and disc bells, because of their manufacturing schedule meant I could not physically get my calipers until early 2010.

So after a few measurments I was able to modify the design of the Hi-Spec mount to suit the larger disc and the AP caliper.

So I have half a front setup modelled up now:

Next up will be modelling the fiesta front upright and hub assy, then I can design a disc bell to suit.

I will check it all fits before manufacture of the parts by modelling the wheel to see if it all fits under the 15inch Superleggera.

Quickly modelled up some bells, the measurements are not 100% correct, but I can easily ammend them later.

cracking work by the way. love the new paint scheme!

I work with Cyco some of you may know him, im actually learning Solidworks on his PC at work. last week he modelled up a disc bell in about 10 minutes showing me how easy it was.

I ammended his drawing of the modelled bell as it was the wrong size diameter, bell thickness, mounting hole pcd, mouting hole size etc. so actually took me about 5 minutes to get it roughly the correct size from his model.

I have had 6 days practice now of 7 hours a day (42 hours total) so getting used to all the tools now, so getting quicker and quicker, Im sure it wouldnt take me much longer than him to do it from scratch.
