Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Tempted, but I need to connect up the crank sensor, cam sensor, air temp, water temp, oil temp, oil pressure, low oil pressure switch, throttle posn sensor, and all four wheel speed sensors first. And it needs coolant and hoses connecting up.
Only 30 wires left to connect. I'm tempted to pre-populate the sensor connector on the back of the ECU and connect the ends of the wires together. Tonights little project.
My remote filter adapter plate isn't earthed, and I need to earth it so the low oil pressure switch works. Hows best to do this? Simple self tapper and a wire to the chassis earth? Or can I get an NPT oil pressure switch that has its own earth tab?Last edited by team_zi; 06-04-2010, 08:19.Comment

Personally I'd drill & tap a hole and fit an earth wire. Car looks great BTW

Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
I'm a contractor, so I get paid nowt for sick days 8(
Wired in the oil pressure sender (Stack Dash) and the oil temperature sender (ECU) last night. I cant get the stack oil pressure display to read anything other than 4psi, so I think I've got the earth and signal wires the wrong round, so no harm done.
I can spin the engine over on the starter, and I know I've got oil going round the engine, as the hoses when I release them, have oil dripping out. I'll fix the pressure sender wiring tonight and try again.Comment

Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Tonight we have working oil pressure gauge and 40psi while cranking the engine over. The 1bar low oil pressure warning leds also work. So the sandwich plate must be earthed via the other sender units.
The oil pressure gauge sender had the earth and signal cables swapped round, hence it read 4psi all the time. When I swapped them over it read 0psi, and the pressure gauge now shows the actual oil pressure.
And 40psi on the key isn't bad is it? And it holds the pressure for 20seconds after I stop cranking the engine.Comment

Just been speaking to the guys on the shopfloor about the best way to join all the shielded twisted pair cables together for the 10 sensor feeds.
They reckon I need to join the drain wires from the ten cables together, using tails, which are then joined together and form a common earth.
The MOD way of doing this is to use a soldersleeve, which is a heatshrinkable sleeve that has a metal solder ring inside, so the tail is layed along side the earth shield, and when heat is applied the tail is soldered to the shield. But my cables have a foil shield and a drain wire, so I cant do that, which is no bad thing really.
I'll make 10 tails tonight, and get to work on the cables.
Its never ever going to be considered a MILSPEC loom, but at least the approach I've taken is to use the same techniques as used for MOD cabling.

Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Made up all the tails for the shielded cables over the weekend. This basically means that all the earths and all the 5v supplies are brought back to a few common wires that terminate in the sensor connectors.
One tail supplies the earths for the crank and cam sensors.
Another supplies 9 earths for the other 8 sensors and the dashboard ecu switches.
Both the two 5v tails provide three 5v wires for the dashboard ecu traction control pot, the four hall effect wheel speed sensors, and the throttle position sensor.
I've prepared four of the shielded cables next to the ecu, to be wired in, and I'll do another four tonight. I'm double checking which wire goes to each sensor too, so I don't make any mistakes.
I'm hoping to get the axle bar back this week, and I'm just left with connecting the gear selector cables and plumbing in the clutch. Does anyone have experience of doing this?Comment

Thanks for the feedback :\
Just a few wires to solder this evening, and she's ready for liftoff.
Need to make two new fuel lines, which'll take an hour + a few bandaids for the puncture wounds from the stainless braiding (I hate stainless braiding).
Need to arrange to get the car down to Luton next week for the hose fitting. Need to pick a sunny day of course.Comment
