I had the mod done on the box, as with the old brass bush in the tail of the gearbox the prop would pull/push in the wrong direction on the bush and wear it out. Then the consequence would be that the lay shaft (?) in the box would bend and then basically muller the gearbox internals, and they would jump out of gear and miss a gear and allsorts. So i'm trying to protect the life of the gearbox more than anything.

Also someone i knew had the box with the brass bush in it, and had less power than my engine and he was forever having problems with the box breaking. Then Quaife did the flange mod for him, and he changed the end of a standard prop to a flange joint (so he had no movement with a sliding joint anywhere). The box was then fine but he was always suffering with a vibration problem which would shake the whole car, and also he was then forever having problems with the axle bending shafts/ tubes. So with my untrained head, i think that the prop was then putting additional strain on the nose of the diff, which would push it back onto the shafts. I'm probably wrong with my therory !! But i don't want to have to go through that with mine!
spot on paul, one piece propshafts whip at high speed causing the effects listed, it will also break the arse off the box if severe enough

      Re: My MK2 Rally car

Well, big update this week. I trailered the car down to Plymouth to see John, who live mapped it with Sandy Brown, and made a few little tweaks here and there.

So we are nearly good to go, just going to set the tracking tomorrow (any suggestions on settings gratefully received!), fit the sump guard, get the handhelds back and fit the camera.

It doesn't sound such a big update when written like that, and nor do i have any photos so all in all a rubbish update! But i do feel good about it all.

Good to hear the engine is all mapped and running well and only the last few jobs to do , but the main thing is sounds like you have a big old grin on your face

                          Re: My MK2 Rally car

Thanks guys. Not my favourite conditions so didn't really get to use the engine and its straight line potential! It was incredibly slippery all day, worse than last year.

Just loading up a video, but once again the sound hasn't come out which is really annoying! So its pretty boring but will give an idea of the conditions.

Stage one i went out on cut 22's on the front and some really worn rears. Came back in and promptly swapped them for a new set of 22's cut into an inter. This was quite an improvement but still couldn't get the power down without short shifting.

I had a few moments, one where i slide off on the 45 left into the water splash and into possibly the boggiest bit of the venue! I managed to catch all but two of the tail out moments, but even on the straights it was twitching which was not good for my confidence.

All in all not a bad event considering the conditions. I didn't look at the results all day, but looking at them now i dropped down to 37th O/A and then worked my way back up to 23rd - which is where we started! My aim is to not go backwards in my seeding, so i achieved that.

Spent hours washing all the crap out, off and in the car today so she's nice and clean again.

I will upload some pics that we took in service in a bit.

Looking good mate! We are going to ampney the end of may... Any tips advice? First time down there. What tyres would you recommend?

                              Cheers
