    Re: My MK2 Rally car

Thanks for all your extinguisher suggestions. The trouble i have is that i have got a helmet box mounted across the link boxes and diff tunnel. I would ideally like to keep it if i can.

muckerbarry If you can get a photo that would be helpful, but i think i understand what you mean.

It looks like i have room available to mount it on the link box cross member, so will have a go at that at a later date.

I spent the day on it yesterday and manager to get all the wiring all dress in the engine bay and all the way back to under the dash.

Today i need to get the old switch console back in and see what works and doesn't! Before i change it over into a new panel.

I started to try and mount the new oil cooler that i bought off Pig, but i can see that not being a 5 minute job! So i need to suss out where people have put their coolers - vertical or horizontal.

      Re: My MK2 Rally car

Spent today out in the sun and on the car. Got most of the electrics back together, filled it up with fuel, and connected up the last of the oil pipes.

Spent ages trying to prime the system with a drill on the pump. Jacked the back end of the car up as high as possible. Took the plugs out as well, went to turn it over - nothing!!

So the battery has gone flat. Tried jumping it off my sisters micro but still nothing. I will try again tomorrow with my diesel vectra.

Still making progress though which is the main thing

          Re: My MK2 Rally car

Spent today trying to get it started. New battery on it, bought a new starter as it wouldn't turn over and it still won't turn over.

Ive jacked up the back end as high as i could to drain the oil towards the engine from the boot. Also put a drill on the pump to try and prime the oil system. Taken the plugs out to spin it over and it would have any of it.

Connected the battery to the starter and it spun over fine - albeit slowly. When it was spinning over would i get oil pressure ? As the gauge (mechanical one) didn't move ?!

Sounds like a bad earth on the block, try a jump lead or a spanner between the block & the shell to prove it.

Re the oil, I always disconnect the pipe closest to the block & let the oil run through (and the air out), that normally does the trick.
I prime it up by hand using an old cam belt on the pulley & I can normally get about 15 to 20psi before starting it.

Also because my pinto uses thick 20W50 I sometimes heat the oil tank with a fan heater in the winter. Makes it loads easier to prime

Glad to see its soooo close now Paul

I had the first proper "post-paint" session on mine yesterday but now work is in the way again

                  Cheers,

                  Paul.

                    Re: My MK2 Rally car

Thanks Gary, Mike and Paul. It seems the consensus is bad earths. I did stick a jump lead from the body to block which helped the starter a fraction.

Tomorrow im going to the wholesalers to get some lugs and 35mm cable and im going to earth it to within an inch of its life! Also going ti get some cerated washers to try and help them bite.

Then going to take off to oil pipes and poor oil directly down then to see if that helps. I suppose there might be an air lock in them somewhere?

I shall keep plugging away! Cheers guys.

                      Re: My MK2 Rally car

she starts!!! albeit idling like a bag of shit!!

Just enquiring into a rolling road set up to fine tune it.

Only needed good earths and turns over a treat - got 60 psi oil pressure too.

Thanks for all your help guys! Got to love TS !

Does 3.8 bar of fuel pressure sound a lot?

                        Well done

The relay connector under the dash - the only standard ones under there on a Mk2 are the flasher unit and sometimes an intermittent wiper relay, I don't recognise the wiring colours but the connector looks standard Ford

                          Re: My MK2 Rally car

Thanks Gavin - i would guess it is for intermittent wipers then as the flasher unit is up above that connector. I will just stick it up out the way then.

I spoke to an engine mapper man tonight, and he said that as long as i can get the software for my ECU then he will sort it.

I might even write a list of jobs left to do tomorrow as i can see light at the end of the tunnel

That will be fatal Paul - once we had a list on the garage wall, it grew every week

Great to hear that she runs though - well done
