Re: My MK2 Rally car
Ok guys, finally an update!
I have fitted the steering column bearing for the power steering. All part of the kit from Cossie Matt. Should give the column more support through the floor pan.
Next up after i attempted to recondition the slave clutch cylinder, by soaking it in break cleaner. After bleeding it all up, the clutch pedal was very stiff, in fact rock hard. I though it was just stuck, so gave it a good push, which bent the pedal!! So i took it off and a mate welded a plate in the back after straightening it, to form a box section. Then got it powder coated again, refitted it. Also bought a new slave cylinder and fitted that.
My mates rally car is off having a new engine fitted over christmas so he has "lent" me his double garage. The first thing i did was jack it up and put it on the sill standsThere is something about a rally car on sill stands!!
First up was to sort the plumbed in extinguisher location and mounting. I have bought new FIA approved straps in preparation for Monteberg Rallysprint in April. I modified the strap openings with a file to get the bolt part of the straps through. I was still keen to get the bracket behind the drivers seat, so i set about folding the fixing flange, back on itself and underneath so that it would get closer to the link box bracing.
Before and after:-
Then i never liked the new alloy centre console that i made up, plus i struggled to get to the switches and fuses as the gear lever and hand brake is in the way. I came up with the idea of making a carbon fibre console which follows the propshaft tunnel. So i started with a cardboard template.
Then made up an MDF template plug
Then covered it in fibreglass resin to seal it.
Then the next part is to wax the mould several times and then mix up the green stuff - i can't remember what its called right now!
Once that has gone off then you have to cover it in something else, again i can't remember what that is called either!
That is as far as i have got with the mould. It needs a good polish up to get it as smooth as possible, and then i can start to lay up the carbon. I have a feeling that is going to be really tricky!
Next up wiring loom. Now i must say a massive thanks to Para144 and Windy as they have been a huge help behind the scenes on the PM's with pointing me in the right direction with how to do it etc.
I have started with the boot wiring by stripping out the existing loom and then wiring the new cables back to the the passenger footwell. Its surprising how long it all takes!
Once i had all the cables in place that i think i need, i took out the cables and then spent a day threading it into some braided sleeving and heat shrinking all the joints.
Then crimped all the ends up and labelled them with yellow heat shrink with printed ends
And that brings us up to date!
Not very exciting really, but it feels like i'm making progress and in the right direction of where i want it to be!Comment

Re: My MK2 Rally car
Looking great there Paul. The new wiring loom look super neat, good job mate, I hate wiring!!!!
She's looking so near to completion. Keep the momentum mate and let me know when you are taking her out, I'd like to see it.

Re: My MK2 Rally car
Thanks Matt.
I'm going to aim to have the wiring done by the end of Jan, but we will see.
You might be coming over to Belgium then mate! My first event that i am aiming for is Monteberg in April. If not then you will probably have to wait till next year.
Hows the pregnancy going? All well i hope.

Re: My MK2 Rally car
I am a bit busy with a rebuild of my own - still in the bare shell state lol.
However, we will be at Monteberg again this year also.
The revised date has given us two weeks less time to get sorted though!
Loving the build Paul.
Nothing like a challenge...www.rallycarsforhire.netComment

Is the rally sprint done with a co-driver or is it like a normal sprint? I could be completely wrong and it's just a normal tarmac rallysigpicComment

Re: My MK2 Rally car
Yes Matt, it is done with a co driver - or co pilot as they call us over there!! Last year i co drove for my mate in his S9 and we were first UK Crew. This year if i do make it, i will be aiming for last UK crew! LOL.
Basically there is one stage, and you do two practice runs, and then 3 timed runs. Fastest run of the three counts as the overall position. I love it, its the best event of my year.Comment

Back to Monteberg.
We have competed 3 times and blown up 2009 and 2011.
2010 we had a steady run and really enjoyed it.
Looking forward to this year and we have more work than Paul!www.rallycarsforhire.netComment
