Re: DW's (new?) Sierra N/A PINTO race car
The car in Lydden aero spec;
The day didnt go too bad yesterday at lydden, athough the qualifying wasn't too great. As we sat on the dummy grid to go out for pactice the car started to weap oil. Luckily an observant marshal spotted it at he last second and the team got the bonnet open to investigate. Turns out to be the brand new oil cooler that I'd recently fitted. It weapt at Brands but I thought it was from the unions so just retightened them but it turned out to be the core weaping onto the unionsAs the leak wasn't bad once moving (just spraying the engine a little) we decided to top it up a touch and go out and get enough laps to qualify.
I kept a close eye on the gauges and took it easy around the the corners to avoid too much oil surge and managed to qualify second from last.
In the pits the boys quickly removed the offending cooler and replaced it with a by-pass pipe, basically back to the way it was at Brands GP, so I'd have to keep an eye on oil temp but we would still get into the race
I didn't make a great rolling start for race one but got past the E30 BMW into devils elbow and started to go after jezz in his rapid little Nova and Paul Goddards BDA mk1. A couple of laps in and a slight mistake from Paul in the escort backed both him and Jezz into my sights. I got my nose alongside Jez into the elbow but not really far enough so not wishing to make contact I fell into lne behind them. For a couple more laps I followed and think I had the pace of the escort but Jezz in his nova was just a lot faster than me round the back of the circuit. Trying different lines to keep in touch I got onto the marbles running wide and nearly lost the back of the car but I caught it only to find that when I arrived at the elbow the dust on my tyres meant that the car just ploughed straight on and by luck more than judgement it stayed out of the tyres and I kept it pointing up the hillpics to follow
That left me on my own and that as how it finished, so nothing lost but nothing gained.

Re: DW's (new?) Sierra N/A PINTO race car
Second race and same position but somehow on the outside of the grid this timeI made a good start, assing a couple of people to follow Bakers 205 around the outside, unfortunately he must have got baulked and braked well early leaving me with no where else to go so after staying on the outsde aroun to the elbow only the BMW was behind me. A pretty uneventful race followed although later on I passed the dented mini of Ken Welch and started to catch Nicks Mk1, obviously they'd had a coming together and Nick was slower with a bent rack as I later disovered. I didn't quite catch nick, maybe a lap or 2 more and I'd have had a shot but he was still lapping well.
All in all it was a steep learning curve racing at Lydden but loads of fun. The off camber bends and slippery surface mean that more speed will come with a bit more confidence and experience but I am looking forward now to silverstone and brandsApart from the oil cooler and a couple of clicks of the dampers the car didn't need touching which is great when the whole race day is condensed into a morning sesion.
Oh and I'm now just 2 signitures away from getting rid of the noice cross :-)Last edited by david_white; 06-09-2009, 12:54.

Re: DW's (new?) Sierra N/A PINTO race car
sounds like a good day, despite the oil cooler problems. Back to Mocal with that i presume?
doing my best to get sorted out to come to the next brands one.. not got a car at the moment so it's tricky getting about!Comment

Yep it was dusty alright, I think the rallycross the previous week didn't help.
That said some of the lads including Graham, Alex Ribbens, Bill and richard went quicker than ever although I think that is more of a testement to the constant developement of their cars

The cooler will go back to burtons this week and I'm sure they'll sort it. It may be that we have to fit a black setrab one as they are heavier duty apparently and lots of the mocal ones have failed on racecars
