At the end of last week the turrets went in, and on Saturday Gary was modding the cage to pick up onto the turrets. The rear H section was removed as it is not now needed, so just the 4 link to do

Did the cage start off as a safety devices one?(looks like it) In the blue book it states that mods to homogolated cages is prohibited so I've been wondering how I'm going to get away with mine (sd)which is already modified .The scrutineers have already commented on it but as it doesn't matter for sprinting they couldn't do anything

Another Grey area ... the Blue Book is full of them.
I spent ages trying to get SD to make a turret mount cage for Mk1's but they where only interested in Hysterical Rallying.

You can build your own cage and you must use the guidlines set out in the Blue book. I belive that the guidelines to modding a cage is there to stop the deletion of tubes, but as always its a strut's interpretation of the rules.
Andys cage wasnt a SD one by the way.

provided it looks professionally welded you should get away with it at nat B level, i once turned a bolt in 6 point into a welded multi point and only once in around 100 events did i have a scruitineering issue, they said it had been weakend, quite how they reconned on that as there were something like 30meters of extra tubing in the car i dont know, and it certainly did a perfect job went i went into the armaco at 80+mph.

if they ask just say it was professionally done by a coded welder and they cant really argue unless championship regs state FIA approved or a specific cage spec

I presumed that Andys' cage is a SD one cos of the brackets on the rear hoop for the front part and door bars.
In the blue book at the end of Q1.1.1 it states that "any modification to a homologated safety cage is prohibited".
I just wonder how they'd know if the cage is homologated in the first place! What I don't want to do is turn up at a race meeting with my car only to have it outlawed because ot the cage .

I really think it comes down to how the bolt in cages get modified... and this is the grey area ..

The bolt in cages move, they flex and also deform as every cage should.
But if the cage has welded bars all over the joins so they can flex or force a shear load onto the 2 M10 bolts securing that join that is when you can have catastophic failure of a cage.

As I said in the drawing, the above is my opinion on what should be added, and perhaps the addition shown in red do make the cage stronger ... but that said i will always recommend a welded in cage if, after you have made the additions you cannot unbolt the cage, then go for a proper Weld In cage in the first place
