    Re: My MK2 Rally car

Yeah - i'm already worried about how to clean the engine after its been "Ampney'd" !

Not sure, i guess not off the top of my head. What would have the centre mounts been for ?

Back in the day when I used to do Down Ampney you could always smell a car that had been there just by opening the door!
Hopefully you should have some centre mounts in the prop tunnel to mount the propshaft, can't remember if the car had already had them removed? Will be obvious when you bolt the prop up?
      Cheers,
      James

Will they be near the handbrake mount? I know Gary made a whole new tunnel from a sheet of metal, but fabricated the new hand brake mount with fixings. I will find out at the weekend!

Because of the modification i have had done to the gearbox by adding the output flange there is now no movement for the prop to slide. The two piece prop has the center bearing which has a slide joint on it.

I had the mod done on the box, as with the old brass bush in the tail of the gearbox the prop would pull/push in the wrong direction on the bush and wear it out. Then the consequence would be that the lay shaft (?) in the box would bend and then basically muller the gearbox internals, and they would jump out of gear and miss a gear and allsorts. So i'm trying to protect the life of the gearbox more than anything.

Also someone i knew had the box with the brass bush in it, and had less power than my engine and he was forever having problems with the box breaking. Then Quaife did the flange mod for him, and he changed the end of a standard prop to a flange joint (so he had no movement with a sliding joint anywhere). The box was then fine but he was always suffering with a vibration problem which would shake the whole car, and also he was then forever having problems with the axle bending shafts/ tubes. So with my untrained head, i think that the prop was then putting additional strain on the nose of the diff, which would push it back onto the shafts. I'm probably wrong with my therory !! But i don't want to have to go through that with mine!

              Hi Paul,

I think you'll have to make a mount - even if the original centre prop mounts are there, the std 2 piece prop fixings are on the sides of the centre bearing, not the top as on your prop

              Looking very good though

Thanks Gav. I will have to bolt a rusty bit of angle to the floor pan to span the tunnel!

Has he had any problems Paul? How long has he been using it since the modification?

                      Re: My MK2 Rally car

Well my mate Camillus () says i have to fit the short end to the front and space the bearing down from the top of the tunnel about 50mm - 60mm.

Sorry i've only just seen this. I bought it from Camillus Bradley, who had it made to my required length. I can report that it fits like a glove.

                            Re: My MK2 Rally car

Well i have had a couple of weekends on the car now, trying to get it all back together. I set my in car camera up to record the engine going, but i think that becauses its in the garage the sound has not come out very well. But i did take a pic with the camera and i think its come out quite well - something different!

I have fitted the new prop with a temporary bracket to support the centre bearing, which i will change to a piece of angle for a more "agricultural" feel

I have also fitted some new wheel bearings to the hubs and put some new brake discs on and cleaned up the pads. Not very exciting really!

So going to make the most of the bank holiday weekend and get the long list of little jobs finished of, such as new oil pressure light, mount the new ECU properly to the tunnel, fit the shift light, the new tractive gear display () bleed the front brakes............ and the list goes on!

I taxed it yesterday which was a great feeling as i'm getting closer to seeing how the new big banger engine goes!
