No luck ! I just can't seem to catch a brake. After few laps on free practise something (stone most possibly) snapped the oil pump belt. I failed to notice it in time. And the engine noticed me and stopped... ... ...
Oils pressure is gone and I hear a distinctive tapping sound. Most possibly big end bearings, crankshaft and perhaps some con rods need replacing. It suns on all 4 and all the bits are in the block thats the good news.
And the crank is not all that shabby either. Now I'm thinking is there material from the shell on these journal
or are they all just hidious scrub marks.
More sorry looking bits... 7th inlet lobe... throw me a bone here.
I need a new crank, have it ballanced and key way'ed, new set of cons, have them ballanced, full set of bearings, new tappet and either re grind to the cam or weld and re grind... and 4 weeks time to do it inllcuding engine build... I feel like I have enough on my plate.
situation rep: new crank sorted and key way machined. About to order new shells and rods. As the rods arrive I've booked them and the crank for ballancing and the cam will be welded and re ground next week too. So the assembly may well begin in a fortnight. And I'll spend the rest of my summer leave in the garage pennyless... as usual. I love motorcar racing =)
That´s a real bad season we had that one year too. Engine brake, spare engine problems... all the stuff you don´t need in racing buisness.
Keep you head up I really like your build too
I sometimes have to keep myself away from the car a few days after things like that and than go back with fresh power
I can't find peace before I know exactly what I'm up against. And even then I need to form a plan or simply admit that I can't. Hard for me to admit it though. I'll suffer when the Visa bill arrives.
Markus, sorry to hear what happened.
When I bought my dry sump oil pump from Kalle (you know the big guys shop in Riihimäki), he said:
remember not to over tighten the pump belt.
The belt must be turned by hand some 90 degrees.
That is because of stones and other pieces that can get between the belt and the pulley.
