Re: Ford Fiesta 1400cc race car

Mounted my new front wings on today, arches need flairing then they need prepping for paint.

Spent some time lining up the new drivers door, needed a bit of tweeking to sit right.

Cleaned up the engine bay ready to touch up a few areas of paint.

Just designed some new solid front top mounts. The Compbrake Pug 205 GTI ones I was using raised the ride height to a point where I was still way above minimum ride height, always bugged me since, so sorting it by getting some new ones made.

Same design, using the same mounting points, just with a 12mm step to allow me to use all the room under the turrets.

Next up is some rear solid top mounts, as I have been using standard rubber ones until now, I bet I have had more compression in them than the springs I have been running!

Small update, but an update none the less.

Neil has sprayed my mirrors electric orange. I now need to get some Carbon Fibre sheet to make the bases.

what are you doing with the old Hi Spec brakes Jason?

very impressed with your CAD modelling btw!

And your car in general tbh...it's inspired me to do similar to my rally Ka.

          Hi-Spec's have been sold now.

Cheers. Modelling is the easy bit, getting the technical drawings right so its made correctly is the hard bit! Jury is out til I get some bits made!

I wish I had your talent and insight when I was 21.... I'd be further up the motor racing ladder by now!

By any chance have you any pics of the Fiesta rack ? I want a faster ratio for the Ka , and would adapt a Fiesta one if it was similar .

Also , the rear drums to discs.. thinking of doing similar , do you know if the KA and Fiesta share the same drum mounts? I've heard of KAs with Focus rear brakes.

I can get a picture when i'm next in the workshop of the rack, and some basic measurments if you like. Racks may be the same, may use different length track rods? I use a Fiesta Zetec S PAS rack in mine, but with no power steering connected, as it is a quicker rack than the NON-PAS rack.

Focus of FRP rear stubs do use the same mountings as the Fiesta, and I am also lead to believe that the Ka shares the same mountings too, so yes, 2.0 Ford Focus, or FRP rear brakes would fit. Might have to do some jiggery pokery with a handbrake cable though, a Fiesta ST150 handbrake cable or FRP handbrake cable is used on mk4 and mk5 fiesta rear disc conversions and the Focus one is too long IIRC.

Please do , if you don't mind? H/Brake cable isn't a problem as I'm fitting a hydraulic handbrake. I fitted a PAS ka rack , 2.8 turns vs 4.25 manual! Whats the turns on the Fiesta one?

Thought as much with the handbrake. Sorted then. I dont know regarding lock, I will have to find out, I know its substantually different to the manual rack though, hence me sticking with the PAS rack.

I ammended his drawing of the modelled bell as it was the wrong size diameter, bell thickness, mounting hole pcd, mouting hole size etc. so actually took me about 5 minutes to get it roughly the correct size from his model.

I have had 6 days practice now of 7 hours a day (42 hours total) so getting used to all the tools now, so getting quicker and quicker, Im sure it wouldnt take me much longer than him to do it from scratch.
Jason has done very well picking up Solidworks in the short time he has been using it.
It does help to model / draw something that you are really interesting in (rather than work stuff).
Alot of the skills that he has shown on this race car have been learn't during his apprenticeship and hopefully he will learn alot more before he has finished.
The car is a real credit to him and proves that it's not always a big budget that wins.
The real talent however is his driving, been up to coombe a number of times now to watch him.

                    Nice one Jas!
Snowed in again today I guess? don't forget to do some work while your off

those solid works models are awesome, how hard do you think it would be to design something ike a tube chassis or a roll cage on the programme ? i have tried a couple of cheapy modelling programmes but there is no way to do bends in tubes can you bend tubes in solidworks ?

                      cheers
The good thing with a decent Engineering apprenticeship is that not only are you learning alot of good skills you are also getting paid!
I did the same route as Jason twice! once for mechanical and again for Electronics the company I worked for at the time where fine with me having 1 day off a week for college so i just kept going.
Ending up doing a 6 year apprenticeship making me dual skilled.
If you can get onto an apprenticeship with a decent Engineering firm go for it, as Jason has found out you will learn a whole lot of usefull skills that you can then adapt to your prefered hobbie.
I build race boats and manufacture race boat components for a number of boat builders during my spare time, I have also built several cars and a simulator for trianing in my sport (waterski racing) in fact it was this simulator that helped me to learn solidworks.
Here is a link to my build thread of this years race boat (mine) you can see how solidworks helped with alot of parts during this build.
Well it's been a long long time coming and alot of hard work and late night's to get the hull and deck finished. But it's done!!! I will post some pics later today. Lay-up is Balsa core with with full Kevlar build on hull and deck. Very large bow and belly tank, foam stringers, Nidaplas floor...

Regarding the space frame that you want to design yes solidworks can draw tubes and you can scallop the ends if needed, it's a great package.
one book i would recommend is 'solidworks for dummies' bought it for my Dad a couple of years back and he found it very useful.
PM me if you want solidworks might be able to sort you out via the post!

Once you have desinged the space frame you can create drawings of each tube and send them out to various companies for quotes, you will be supprised just how cheap some bits can be manufactured for if you know the right compaines to use!!

I have the drawings of Jasons brake parts out for quote at the moment, these will be done on a CNC machine and the guy I use is very reasonable.

Trig Jason was thinking about doing the last track day with us but he had a race the following day so could not risk damaging the car.

To give you an idea of how quick he is in is 1400 Zetec fiesta he can lap in 1min 21sec.
The quickest car i timed on your last track day was one of the porcshe's (996 I think) and that was doing a 1min 26sec

I think you were averaging about 1min 33sec!!
Now do you want him to join us?

My fastest around Combe is a 1.19.9 on full road tyres (MSA Blue Book List 1A Tyres) as we have to race on in our series, I use Toyo T1R's. I'm hoping I can get down into the 1.18's this year after the rebuild. Slicks will be about 1.5 - 2 seconds a lap quicker still, yet to try some on it, but will this year at some point.

For perspective, the fastet I've clocked the Rayland Cossie lap combe is a 1.17. I look forward to RS day in July, I might have to come and do a bit of Cossie slaying.
