    Re: My MK2 Rally car

Took the car for a little holiday today to WSM!

All set ready for work to commence on Monday. I'm sure James will keep us posted on the progress.

      Re: My MK2 Rally car

      Evening all,
Yep, the car is on holiday with me for a day or two,
First job today was drain the fuel, remove the fuel tank and pop the rear windows out, ready to fit the turret extensions,

      In we go!

      More tomorrow,
      Cheers,
      James

          Re: My MK2 Rally car

          Evening all,
          Back on with this today,
Time to get it masked up for some paint,

Hard to see in this pic, but I softed edge the masking tape of the Glassfibre matting on the firewall to minimise any hard edges, trust me, masking up the inside of a rally car is not fun!

Seam sealed, primed and painted, colour looks off to the centre panel, it's not, it's just covered in dust!

Decided to tackle the chassis leg scollops next, the coilovers are very tight to the turrets with the axle central to the shell,

Which has also started to wear the new coilovers,

The turrets are not fitted as tight to the chassis leg as I normally fit them as can be seen in this pic,

Have managed to bash it a bit flatter and a general tidy up, but did not want to start burning the paint inside and in the boot, so not a bad compromise, if there is not enough clearance now I will move the axle shock brackets out a fraction,

          That's it for today,
          Cheers,
          James

                  Re: My MK2 Rally car

                  Nice work there.

The extra travel at the rear to stop it sitting on the bump stops and some "Known" spring rates will do the handling no end of good.

What spring rates did you decide on in the end mate? 280, 300 front??? 200, 180-220 progressive rear?

Well I better not keep you waiting any longer!
O/S turret marked out for trimming,

                    All done,

Time to tackle the Watts towers next, long tower had been repaired/rewelded a couple of times before,

Cut the blobby welding bit out and put a floor strengthening plate in and made some new gusset plates,

Pretty much the same job on the short tower, lost pics so will post up tomorrow,
Watts bars now pretty much level at ride height and Stone chipped underneath,

Arty shot with the windows back in, I wont be giving up the day job!

Got the coilovers refitted and there is now a clearance between the coilovers and turrets/chassis legs, happy days!
Wheels back on, 2" lower than it arrived with room for more adjustment and not sat on the bump stops,

                    Almost there now,
                    Cheers,
                    James

James, i'm sure i tried to get Paul to have some large Tubs and my Turrets, .... infact i think i did my normal .. 'sell this one and it will almost pay for a new shell' thing on him.

I never really looked at the back end, note to self.. see dodgy welds on tunnels... check everywhere..

                      well spotted and well repaired

                          Thanks Matt, nearly there.

I've bought some 300LB 10" front springs, but i might change them to 12" so i can get the full length or travel. James has pointed out Gartrac do a fancy top mount to lift the top of the strut up a bit towards the inner wing - if that makes sense?!

The rears are still the 180 progressive springs. Give that a go and see what it like. I think you have said 300lb with the Vauxhall and Fossey told me he runs 300lb so thats two top recommendations for me.

Have to say, the work you have done is lovely, nice to finally see some in the flesh,

                              Evening all,
                              She is finished!
First thing today was get her off the lift and took the chance to take a couple of pics,

Think the rear mud flaps might need a trim now!
Next up needed to make some little towers for the false floors,

                              A tickle of paint,

                              Bolted in,

                              Hole for cold air feed,

So there we go all done,
                              Cheers,

I remember it well. We went for breakfast then back to your workshop and drank coffee out of the largest mugs in Essex, while we stood and looked at the car on the stands!

                                I kick myself daily that i didn't !

Still if i were to do it again, i wouldn't mess about buying a used car. The first rally car i built myself, and this one i bought "ready to rally" and its cost me more than building one i reckon! LOL

Between your work and James' i think we are finally there now with the shell.

Thanks to you both for your using your skills on my car. I highly recommend both of you guys to the Turbosporters for top notch fabrication skills.
