Re: DW's (new?) Sierra 3dr YB race car

Ian, yes I would like to make a few upgrades during the rebuild, a few of the issues I always wanted to sort include getting a proper weld in cage, decent seat mounts and moving the fuel tank into the boot. I expect a few more to end up happening but we'll see how time and budget go Have already started the strip down ready to start again

Good to hear there will be a few upgrades with the rebuild and your moving forward with the car , as was sure Gary would be wanting to add a few tricks along the way

Waiting for Gary to find me a space to do a few upgrades to mine and already dreaming about the new bits would like done

Re: DW's (new?) Sierra 3dr YB race car

Strip down almost done, just engine and box to lift out then drop off suspension.
I am now reshelling the car as the changes I need to make will be easier with a std shell, such as a completely different cage etc. Once I've moved after Xmas the new build will start in my new garage and hopefully I should have a rolling shell ready for cage etc within another month or so..

              How's this coming on now?

Have you found a shell, or still settling in after moving?

Just getting settled thanks, this has appeared in my garage this week though...

Thanks to Andy and John Pipe, was quite a road trip down to flooded somerset to collect it! I have already transferred the front suspension and brakes from the 3 door and I am going to start assembling a new beam for it over the next week so that its a fully rolling shell. Once its fully stripped and cleaned engine and box will go in, then its off to have a cage, seat mounts and any other welding required, then paint.... Sounds easy

Re: DW's (new?) Sierra 3dr YB race car

New n/s rear arch ordered as currently a bit crusty and perspex windows ordered.

Once engine and box are out of the 3 door it will have to go, either complete with doors and cage, ready to jig, or worst case broken for spares. It has one new wing and a steel tailgate ready to go on so is very repairable with a bit of time spent on it..

Why did you go far a Saff & not repair your 2 door?

On another note, I clicked on your Escort thread but it was difficult to get a feel for it without the pictures, what was that like?

You need to speak to the current owner of the escort as he still uses it. As you would expect from a Rtro build though it was awesome, just got a bit too heavy with the fat 3.2 tt V6!

I went for a saff as the parts and panels are a hell of a lot cheaper and more common (most shared with std 5 doors too) plus the saff shells are lighter and stiffer. A bonus too is that the doors are shorter which helps in my tiny garage plus its nice to do something different if you are virtually starting again!!

Nice to see the ressurrection underway Dave Do you have a timeframe for it being completed?

BTW I used to have a soft-spot for the old Q8 Saff's in Monte trim - looking forward to see how this ends up...

                          Cheers,

                          Paul.

I know the Saff's are stiffer but never heard of them being lighter?

Are you starting a new build thread or continuing here?

It's been a really good read, well... except for this last bit!

                            All the best anyway

ive seen similar spec saff's and 3 door on weight bridge at race meetings, there wasnt a lot of difference but yes the saffs were lighter, i guess because the saff shell doesnt have such big openings in it for doors and tail gate, less metal was needed to make ir stiff enough
