Re: DW's (new?) Sierra N/A PINTO race car

Right had a sort out of gearboxes today, the old T5 is up for sale so I thought i'd better start sorting out its replacement.

Its a good ole type 9 and I gave it a bit of a clean up, well a lot actually. It came out of a grasstrack car so it had mud an inch thick that had baked to a near concrete consistancy Any way I got it a bit cleaner and found a 5 year old spray can of engine enamal that once unsiezed did a great job of making it look better.

Cleaned and painted the strengthened mount too and tomorrow I'll try to get the quaife ally top cover for it. Then its off to the gearbox man for a fresh tranx kit to go in once I've sorted which ratios to get

I've also sourced 99% of the engine internals this week so hopefully the engine build will begin proper very soon

Dave mate, unless the Sierra tunnel is a lot bigger than the escort by the box, don't change to an alloy top cover, they foul. Also, the steel ones are better for installing a breather

Well there's a fair bit of room judging by the size of the T5 that slid out but I've not had trouble fitting those covers before. They add quite a bit of strength to the std casings and are essential if fitting an ally casing (which I'm not btw).

That's cool then mate, just I know Matt had a bit of an issue to begin with I believe with it fouling on the tunnel.

I think the sierra tunnel is a lot bigger than an escort and taller, although it will still be quite tight around the bellhousing I think

That's only because you have these funny ideas like putting the engine next to you (almost)

Re: DW's (new?) Sierra N/A PINTO race car

Gotta say a big thank you to Clint for sourcing some important parts for my pintosaurus and even donating a couple of big bits to the cause.

Will put some pics up tomorrow but thanks also to Gary @ retro for spending half the day today helping me turn a std cossie door into a lightweight masterpiece
Will be doing the drivers one to match soon, unless I can find a better one without the dents

Just need to lighten the tailgate a lot now, and still trying to find a fibreglass bonnet

Re: DW's (new?) Sierra N/A PINTO race car

Right, got loads sorted out in the past few days. Got a new set of bells and brackets made so that I could mount my Hi-Spec brakes on the sierra for the first time. Cheers Jeff for quick service as usual

These are 6 pot monsters, with 335x32 rotors and Mintex 1144 pads. Rears are staying as vented cossie discs with new std pads for now, although one day I might try Hi-specs direct replacement billet caliper which must be half the weight (even the 6 pots on the front weigh f all)

Also got my alloy bellhousing double quick which along with the quaife top cover means its ready to trial fit before going for its tranx kit.

Also got a couple of pics of the lightened door, ready to go for painting. The white one will be the spare as it has lots of golf ball size dents, but look how much metal we took out without weakening the black one The whole lot is swaged and lipped over.
The new door also has a handle and opening lever incorporated into it which Gary made up

Heres the new inlet manifold, it is the longest one around, which should help a bit with this engine. It still leaves me 120mm to fit the t/b's and 100mm more for a filter or airbox. Damn this thing has much more space than the escort..

Don't worry about the strut brace, its already gone and a new x-brace has been designed

Oh and one last bit of good news, I managed to source a lightweight bonnet and boot at last from Smith and Deakin . They also do fibreglass front wings but I'm not sure I can afford to lose the strength at the front as sierras are notoriously week there, although the multi-point cage should help a lot
I'll wait until I really need wings before I go there anyway.
