    Re: DW's (new?) Sierra N/A PINTO race car

    Got the engine bay flatted down today, nothing major just used scotchbrite pads and emery just to get rid of any bad bits from spills or burns/scratches.

    Also test fitted my new bias box set up, which fits in place of the old servo and retains the std cossie pedal assy. Makes the inside of the car tidier and is a lot easier to work on the bias or master cylinders rather than the norm of having to lay upside-down in the car with your feet on the ceiling while brake fluid drips on you (we've all done it )

    I did start to try the manifold to check that it wasn't too near the cylinders but it turned out to be bloody miles away with about 6" of clearence

      Re: DW's (new?) Sierra N/A PINTO race car

      The inside of the car is nearly prepped now, just needs a good clean. I have also been trial fitting the new (additional) door bars as the current ones do a great job of stiffening the shell along the sills, but do little to protect occupants

      They came from OMP and are universal so will need adjusting to length. This just means we have to break the spot weld on one end, slide the end piece out and cut down the tube about 10mm or so to get the rear a bit lower down the main hoop. The front of the door bar rests just above the existing one and although not ideal triangulation is about as good as it gets without refabricating the cage.

      Seems a shame to add weight to the car at this stage but safety has to come first and i'd hate to take anyone out on track in a car without proper door bars, especially as the doors are about as heavy as crisp packets now

      Front of door bar in position but rear needs lowering a couple of inches or so by shortening the bar;

            Cheers.

            Might also add a dash bar in the future. Would be easy as it passes through the existing steering column mount and lines up with the bars that go to the top of the turrets

                dont think i would as your cage is tied into the A pillars front struts and therfore strut brace, not forgetting the fact that the sierra has a decent bulkhead,

                less is more, with only a pinto powerplant every gram is going to count.

                incidentally on the less is more front with my car im considering running my dry sump without an oil cooler, after all the dry sump has double the oil capacity of the wet sump, its going in teh engine bay wher it will dissipate heat better than in a box in the cabin, the rads massive and we only do short races

                  Re: DW's (new?) Sierra N/A PINTO race car

                  Yeah i make you right about the bar graham, it would be all too easy to add another 10 metres of rollcage negating all of the weight loss we've done on the rest of the car.

                  The oil cooler idea is interesting though. My tank will sit right in the flow of air from the front of the car and if anything my rad is ott for the engine, especially if i replace it with an alloy one at a later date. The engine bay is a lot less confined than an escort too, might have to look into that, I would have to buy another oil cooler as I can't use the one I've got so I might give it a try.
                  If it will work on a longish 'test' day then a 20 min race will be no problem.

                    Re: DW's (new?) Sierra N/A PINTO race car

                    ok it might not be dry sumped but richard brent doesnt use one either, the only oil problems hes had was when the mi16 engine was fitted and thats because so much oil collects in the head the sump simply runs dry!
