Well what a day, first some thanks, thanks to everyone who chipped in to get the wheels, and thanks to those who turned up to see the car yesterday
So with qualifying looming up under grey skys we headed to the collecting area, a bit of rain making the ground damp, not wet enough for full wets, but we needed to run on the new slicks to scrub them in.. a few others had turned up with wets, and as Andy headed out our fingers where crossed for a dry line on the circuit. As the laps went buy a line did appear and it showed .. 1:04... 1:03... 1:02... 1:00 ... 0:58... 0:56 and the quickest still on a mildly damp circuit of 0:55.9 ... back in the 55's again ..with Richard Brent post a 0:57 we had out qualified Andy's rival in Class D
Now this must have shook Richard up as he went promptly to the Dunlop truck and had 4 new tyres fitted, and then scrubbed them in around the paddock.
Back in the pits though and Andy reported a missing Clutch, he would have a pedal, then have nothing, He said he was going into paddock turn slowly as he wasnt sure he would get the gear for the drive out, and didnt want to bin the car in the gravel.
'so can you go quicker once the clutch is sorted ?'
'yes, i was holding back a lot' was Andy's reply
Things where looking good
David and Jimbo set about swapping the Master Cylinder over for the clutch, with Steve and Ant helping with the tools, and i made some adjustments to the car, then we had the wait for the race in the afternoon.
Race 1 .....
Andy was 11th on the grid of 32 cars, we was all joking about him getting a nosebleed being so high up the grid . Andy was in amongst the turbo cars, YB cossies, Seat Cup cars etc ... a little old pushrod right up there
The cars set of for the warm up lap and came back into view with Rod Birley leading the 2 Nissan Skylines with his WRC Escort ... the thunder rose as the lights went out, and we're off....
Next lap round and Andys lost a place, never mind Richard was still a few cars behind him.
A few more laps and Richard is on the back of Andy, I'd been watching the times, and Andy was slow, something was wrong, at the time i was thinking clutch again, as he wasnt that slow, Richard got past and then next lap andy was infront again ... problem sorted? No, Richard had passed Andy under a yellow flag, so slowed to give Andy back the place to save being disqualified later, he got past Andy again to finish first in class with Andy 2nd.
As Andy pulled the car into the pits he wasnt happy, he had no front brakes this time, a quick brake temp test showed the rears to be 225'c and the fronts 65'c .... all i can say is well done Andy for getting a 2nd place with effectivly only a handbrake
David drove the car back to the paddock, and he was shocked, as soon as you wanted to brake the rear was sliding.
What is it with this pedal box, its a nightmare, new cylinders going down, old cylinders failing, nothing logical to it, its haunted, it must be.. anyway i started to check for what could be wrong, and after much head scratching and looking, testing, pushing, pulling i found the bias was all one way, With Jimbo's and mine heads in the car we working out the bias bar,
'if its that way its to the front isnt it ?'
'think so.... or is it '
'sod it lets move it and try it '
So we wound the bias bar all the way over and did a visual check and finger feel of the cylinders before telling Andy to jump in and test it ... As the DTM had quite fortunatly decended on Brands Hatch and layed their beach towels down in the middle of the paddock ready for next weekend, yes next weekend, not this one, we had an area of about a football pitch to test the brakes.
A few stops and Andys happy, allthough we are all confused as to how the bias had moved from one side to the other. It may have had a few turns accidently while the clutch was being swapped, but not a full inch and a bit of thread, it took a while for me to wind it over as it was, again I think the pedal box is jinxed
Race 2......................
Andys happier in the collecting area, and headed out with a
warm up lap done..the roar of the engines as the race starts and we all wait for the cars to come round ... and we wait ... and we wait ... and we wait ... and we wait ... whats the hells happened, finally a very slow Rod comes round with a skyline behind him, the other one had blown its gearbox in race 1, and then a gap, and a few more cars come round slowly, then we see Andy, what ever had happened he had missed it .. looking at the cars as the came round there was 4 missing, a thundersaloon sierra and some Seat's .. then the pace car picked up Rods car and led them round for 6 laps as the Marshalls clear up the damage.
The race starts again with andy behind Grahams Nova, the lap times in the 58's, graham's doing a good job of holding Andy behind him, all the time Richard is pulling away, finally andy gets past and is imediatly on a 56.0 lap, but with no laps left to catch Richard, Andy settles for another 2nd place.
2 second places, and no damage to the car, its a result, not the one we wanted, but hey, thats racing
