Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
For Aintree I might just turn the rev limiter off
well looking at the power plot it would happliy run onto 8K in top, undergeared is usually faster than overgeared,
better to reach a lower top speed fast and hold it than only just hit your top speed as you brake
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Quaife don't know what gear ratios are in the gearbox.
They only made three sets of ratios for the prototype, and they dont know which set I have. Its clearly not the quoted 3.857 that I ran before in my BC box (and would have been ideal TBH).
It cant be 4.38 (which my calculations make it to be) because they haven't made a 4.38 for the box.
What they have made are 3.857, 4.08 and 4.69, so I reckon I've been given the 4.69 final drive, which I cant say I'm that pleased with [ given the lack of top speed at Aintree, 115mph on all four timed runs]
I'll live with it for the remainder of the season, and return the box in September for 'inspection' and for them to change the ratios. As to where the other ratios are, 'they're in other gearboxes' so presumably they can be made available for mine when it goes back.
I cant say I'm especially happy with the situation. Luckily I'm not running a full championship year, and this year is a 'toe in the water' to let me iron out any issues before next season.
But to not know what's in the box they supplied me with! Incredible. They need some configuration control at Sevenoaks.
The box itself is beautiful to drive. Gear changes are so simple, it makes all the right noises, and the paddle clutch is taking some getting used to as its like an on-off switch if I'm not careful pulling away. No oil leaks, no horrible noises, no problems (touch wood) so lets hope it stays that way.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
What top speed would you prefer Graham? How long periods do you have to spend on the limiter with the current ratio?
I very much agree with the other Graham in what he said about the ratios and acceleration.
I personally would like to hit the limiter right after the half point of the main straight rather than hitting the limiter right before the braking or not hitting the limiter at all. Which is my case at the moment.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
its an extreme example perhaps, but i was down at the brighton speed trials years ago, long enough ago for it to of been a 1/2 mile event not the 1/4 it is now, anyway, two metro 6r4s ran back to back, the first crossed the finish line doing an impressive147mph, the second one sounded sick as a pig, and it missfired and spluttered the entire length of the track, and went through the timing lights at only 112mph, when it was announced that the second missfiring slower car was actually faster over the half mile did we realise it wasnt missfiring the car was simply on the rev limit in top gear after an increadbly short distance, had the track been just a few yards longer the other car would of been quicker over the course.

4th in class at Llandow, 31st overall (from 65 starters) and 3rd fastest fwd, beset with wet stuff falling from the sky!
Having now competed on two events, I'm certainly adjusting to the sequential gearbox ok, and the gearing that I thought was too short, appears to be fine so far. I'll live with it for the time being.
Next outing is Ford Fair, on the Classic Ford stand, and I'll be out on track in the afternoon "showing the Fiesta's how it should be done" (their words not mine, so no pressure eh!)
The newest member of the family turned up yesterday. Well, it didn't just turn up, we had to go to RPS in Witney to collect it.
A lovely solid Mk2 2 door, 1600 Sport, with a Type 9 five speed box, billies, minilites, SD cage, plumbed in extinguisher, isolator, terratrip, corbeaus, 4 point harnesses, in white.
It not mine, but it belongs to my old man, and hopefully I'll get to have a play in it soon.
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Hi Graham,
I recognise that Escort, possibly from when RPS first had it for sale last year - looks very good
Before RPS fitted the 1600, it was used on Endurance Rallies in 2007 & 2008 by Rob Dance as a 1300, so maybe it was originally a 1300 Sport instead of a 1600 Sport
I know Rob's son Graham, and he navigated in it a few times, so let me know if you want any more info...
Re: Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber
Yes, you're right Gavin. Its a 1300Sport, currently with a 1600 engine in it.
My Dad would like to be able to find out as much as he can about it.
Thanks for the pictures. Good find.
Already started peeling the horrible red stripes off it, and we've found some rot around the bottom of the air-box gizmo at the rear of the engine bay / foot of the windscreen, so there is some work to do to restore it. Dads also talking about a respray.
It came with very little history, so the more we can track down the better. Any chance of the contact details of the navigator or Rob Dance himself?
