Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Thanks Ex I wouldn't mind some luck.

Luckily its my fiesta so no harm done to any outsiders.

The car is now on the trailer ready to take a small trip to my work where I can sort the tracking.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

        Thanks Dave!

I believe you'll hear from me.

Got the tracking sorted today. Got the rear axle lined spot on so hopefully I can actually feel some improvement on the traction. I've only driven it about 10 meters now but allready I can see the dust markings on the tires have moved closer to the inside of the tyre so thats a promising sign.

Also spotted a new oil leak from the cam cover. Thats 7 M6 holes one needs to plug if using this set up. Which I really would not recommend at this point.... propably just better of using a cam cover thats designed for the head.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Back from the rollers. Everything went fine. No more oil leaks and no actual issues other than the bloody Optima battery was somewhat dodgy and prevented the voltage raising. Quick swap to a regular battery put the voltage up again.

Long story short the numbers at the end of the day are 201 bhp @ 8250rpm and 189 Nm @ 6100 rpm. We pretty much achieved what we were after. We got the power and tourque higher up the rev range and gained 10 bhp and 8 Nm
On a slight down side the engine developed a dimp in the torque curve at around 5000rpms. No matter what we tried we could not flatten it without it costing an arm and a leg in top end power. Unfortunatelly we ran out of time before we had a chance to try how much the air box would've levelled out the dimp. Last time it did just that without it costing too much top end power.
Despite not testing the box I believe I will be running the engine with the box rather than open trumpets.

              Thanks DW !

Honestly at the moment I'm glad I have a evening off garage, but yes I really like to see how it goes now. I hope the bent axle and the new LSD will live up to the expectations. And hopefully the new founf top end grunt will give some edge to the "dog fights".

Here it is in its prime, just few laps before the engine failure.

On limiter in fourth and I f@@ked up a gear change. Instead of 5th it got to 3rd gear and that was pretty much it. Revs shot trough the roof and so did the pistons and valves.

i feel for you mate, i did exactly the same thing some years ago, though i was lucky it only bent the valves, but i had a lot more valve/piston clearance than you do

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Thanks fellas. It's not fun when something like this happens but then again I do take comfort in knowing that the failure was not the engines fault nor due to poor build quality.
And now I have a good chance to mill some material off the valves to gain (much needed) valve to piston clearance.
I'll dismantle the head today and send it out for repairs if possible tomorrow. I believe it can still be saved.
I do need a new piston though and really could not afford to buy a whole set.
So sourcing a single piston could be a real problem.
