Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

I'm running out of tiny things to do while waiting for the head. It could be done by easter though
And thats fien by me since the bottom end is pretty much done.
I still need the new oil hoses and a new bearing for the cam belt tensioner. Thats right...again...I must be tensioning the cam belt way too tight this is the second tensionerpulley I've broken. Mind that I've only done one event with this bugger!!!!

Heres what I've been up to today.

I like it too. Fits nice and tight too. That fly / crank locking tool is a god bless . No chance to get the torque required without it.

I had the heavy duty timing tool against the crank when tightening the crank pulley , and I was terrified of damaging something!

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

I think I figured out better way of plumbing the oil lines to the remote filter. This way I'll need less hose and less bends. And they should not rub against anything.

With plumbing, absolutely! As I said earlier in this thread I hate plumbing! But I wish I'd done this remote filter plumbing like this in the first place. If I have been able to do the whole season instead of one event I would have had a puncture in the pressurised oil hose. Thats pretty much 10 litres of oil on the track. Propably would not have had any frieldly taps on the back.
I have once took part of such an accident ending up on the sand and a Taunus Coupe took my the right rear corner with the wheel away.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Took the Reyland tensioner apart this morning.
The bearings seem very dry and make a noise
I talked to the bearing dealer about my situation and he told me it could be the heat that eats these bearings. Especially bearings with rubber seals.
I dont know. Should I remove the vam belt covers? Loosen the belt?
Anyway he offered me a higher guality bearings with metal seals. Metal seal is less resistant to dust but endures heat much better. So sounds ideal for under the cover bearing. I'll have a go with those.

I would be very careful about fitting different bearings, metal dust covers allow the bearing grease to escape, not a good idea imho, try to get a better qualty bearings with rubber seals, and yes bin the belt cover as this will help cool the tensioner, btw have you got two bolts securing the tensioner or just 1? I have built up a bit of a hatred for those single nut securing offset tensioners as they want to loosen the nut when the bearings start to go, you could do with replacing the bearings at regular intervals as it could easily save the engine from a complete wipeout

Well it cant' do any worse than the rubber sealed on I had in it. One event and daylight was coming trough the seals !!
I took the dustcovers of tand the bearing was dry as a desert.
I think I'll have o go with these high quolity metal dust cover bearings the retailer suggested.
I have one nut and stud bolt. I use a nordlock washer to keep the nut in place incase of any bearing issues.

Heres the bearing on a kitchen counter.

Here it is held agaist light.

I believe it should not be letting daylight trough. I don't know the RPM rating for the bearing but it may have been spinned too fast in too hot and the seal gave.

The new ones are rated for 14 000rpms. Adn the tensioner pulley dia is bigger than the cranks cam belt pulley so the it should rev less than the engine.
