Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

I'm using Centerforce dual organic clutch (after numerous trial and errors) and works like a dream. Smooth and absolutely no slip. Just make sure the pressureplate is up to the job. too weak and no disc material will hold the torque.

Is that a 7,25" clutch? Whith what engine do you use it with? Defenately interrested in one too.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Nothing going on much in the garage nowadays. Times are quite hard but I will try and sort the oil leaks and the clutch needs to be chnged to something else if I m to race the car this summer.

Well I actually sorted the other(the other seems to be the rear crank seal) leak today. It was one of the trickiest I've experienced. The upper alternator bracket had fractured leaving the lower bracket under heavy load. The lower bracket is bolted to the oil sump which in turn is bolted to the oil pump in the face of the engine. The forces applied to the lone lower bracket actually fractured the oil pump. The crack is so tiny I have not seen it earlier despite numerous attemps to source the leak.

Now to sort the new clutch and I reckon I'm good for the season to come.

            Thanks.
I went back to take some pictures to see the crack better zooming the photo but even then its not very visible.

            The broken upper bracket

            Can you spot the fracture?

You needed good eyes to see that crack. Well done for sorting it out. There is nothing more annoying than a stubborn oil leak.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Some update after a long quiet season.
The clutch to cure all clutch related illnesses is here. It should take more heat / slip and by the looks of it, it will.
Taking out the engine and the box tomorrow. The engine needs a new oil pump new clutch, new rear crank seal and the box needs....well I do not know what the bod needs. Propably some sort of dry lube to stop it leaking.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Thanks David, I like to believe it will. The disc and the floater plate are twice thw thickness of the cintered clutch so propably will take more heat without distortion.

Took the engine and the box out last saturday. Luckily the flywheel looks ok I'll get it checked and re faced if needed. But the good news is it should be useable.

The SL72 looked surprisingly dry when out of the car. And the oil level has not dropped, so It just may be engine oil around the box and all over the floors from the leaking crank rear seal.

So Engine wise its starting to look good for the season to come.

This is an oil pump from the very early Zetec S's this one has a tiny metal bit to stop the cam belt bouncing.

Getting ready for yet another season

Still here Been doing this from 2001. Spent one summer building the baby Zetec so this is my 10th anniversary with the Escort.

No big changes for this year. Treated the old girl with new clutch and a new oil pump. The engine is back in but just before the firs fire up I decided to change the setting in the boot a bit. A new fuel tank has been ordered and I'll re position the oil tank. And I'll try out a new type of oil.
Slight changes in the front suspension too. Raised TCA fixing points and the bump steer kit.

I got cold feet running open trumpets like I was supposed to so ordered an air filter that should suit the need. Should house the longish trumpets and still fit in without beeing an utter nightmare to install.

I'll report later if everything goes as planned but it seems good.

And now I would like your opinion on something.

This is the fuel tank I bought.

Now I wish this pot/gutter/ditch , in the bottom of the tank would double as a surge pot. Does it?
I'd love to leave the surge pot off with the two transfer pumps and use only one high pressure pump? Opinions and experiences will be greatly appreciated!

                            Cheers
                            Markus
                            sorry for the long pabble

Glad to see you're still about

I would say the sump would probably work OK without a swirl pot on a road car, but you might still get surge on a race car if fuel levels get below 1/4 tank.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

I'm more hopefull now that I've found out a bit more about plumbing the tank. The return line is plumbed to the sump in the bottom of the tank so it will receive fuel despite the hevy lateral forces. Hopefully anyways. The idea is to minimise the weight moving around the boot so will be driving with minimal fuel on board so fuel surge must be taken into count.
