Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car
So here we go again.
Windscreen has been changed to a crystal clear virgin new one. New prop has been installed and the rear axle has been aligned. The new 4 link bars worked a treat and were easy to adjust. We are go for the event this weekend!

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car
Thank you very much Rich! I feel like I need it I really can't afford to wreck anything anymore.
This next event is the Finnish "Monaco". Biggest circuit racing event in Finland. Everybody pushes just that little bit harder than on regular events so they tend to be rich and full of crashes and collisions. Hope to avoid them but have no intensions of backing down when it comes crowded....

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car
Not sure yet Tristan. I was on track yesterday end was really strugeling for grip. My tyrepressure were miles off though and thr track was well lubricated so propably nothing to do with the new link bars."Failure is always an option." - Adam SavageComment

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car
The weekend is over for me. Yet another DNF. Fook this is getting old fast.....
The release bearing dismantelled itself. And as a bonus the oil leak in the SL72 got worse and the clutch started slipping.
Leak seems to come from the input shafts oil seal. It now drips from the bellhousing.
The release bearing failure is due to my poor fabrication work. The bearing sits too close to the clutch not leaving enough gap and spins along all the time.
So come monday its off with the powertrain again. New seal new bearing and perhaps a new friction plate if the delay is not too long.
Also came close to yet another engine failure.
This moorning in the free practise run I noticed the engine is not pulling like it should. The noise pedal seemed to get stuck on something. On a quick pitstop we found nothing wrong with it though. And the butterflys seemd to open fully. Another outing on the track proved something was deffo wrong. Yesterday made 8000rpms on 5th on the main straight and today could not even get to fifth.
Datalogger showed only 60% open throttle.
Under closer inspection we noticed something was blocking the butterflys within the throttle bodies. Then I noticed this
Two of them cover retaining plates were missing. They were sitting nicely behind the butterflys in the 4th and 3rd inlet preventing them from opening.
There was no way of removing them with the TB's in place so the airbox and the inlet need to come off
Took the airbox out the fast way, removed the TB's and them plates dropped right out.
Re installed the tbs and problem was solved and I made it to the qualifying. This time with open trumpets.
Unfortunately I got the ultimatum from the scruteneers to fix the oil leak or retire. And I would have, only I did not have nor could I find a new release bearing anywhere....
Well pissed now.... but I guess you live and learn...."Failure is always an option." - Adam SavageComment

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car
Thannks Ex, I think (hope) this is a more laborious than expensive fix.
Well I'll be wiser tomorrow when the engine and box is out. Today when I drove the car to trailer the clutch did not release at all so the bearing is pretty much shot by now.
It had funny symptoms yesterday the clutch pedal was jumping up and down with the revs. I was thinking what the F**k's taping my leg but then noticed the pedal. Thats just not looking right."Failure is always an option." - Adam SavageComment

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car
Oh and as for beeing lucky I really feel so too. If the metal bits would have been different size or shape I'd be facing another disaster now. Theres also the question about them 4 rivets retaining the alloy lips. They may have passed the engine naturally or do some damage compression test will show.
I've raced 9 years with open trumpets and had no issues. This is the first year withsome sort of filter box and I've allready had all sorts of trouble with it. I'm going back to open trumpets. I'm done with filters and boxes."Failure is always an option." - Adam SavageComment

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car
Been busy today.
Took the engine and the box out
The release bearing came apart on its own.
Set out to fix this minor bruise in the intake port. When I noticed some faul play in the 7th and 8th intake valves.
Ended taking of the head.
The no. 7 and 8 intake valves did not seal propperly. The valve shim in no7 was out of place nothing more. But the number 8 did not seal propperly without a tapping the bucket a bit. It seems to stick on something propably seizing on the guide. Will take the head to a machine shop tomorrow to be looked after.
Some rivets have gone trough.
Ordered a new release bearing, and a new floater plate for the clutch which was again warped. Hope I'll make it in time for the last event in three weeks....deja vu"Failure is always an option." - Adam SavageComment
