Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

im really struggling for motivation at the moment, the main problem is needing to spend some big chunks of money to take the project forward and i havnt got any

i did a bit on the intake side the other day rummaging around in a scrap bin i found these

bored a 14mm hole up the middle of them

mounted them at an angle and flycut a semi circle into them, and cut some holes in a strip of alloy plate

and got these! which still need welding together, once i've decided exactly what im doing with regards to filtration because thats going to effect the positioning of the outer injectors ( going to run the engine on 8 injectors)

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

ive also been thinking long and hard about the dry sump, dry sump pans for this engine are horribly horribly expensive, the cheapest i found was from america and that was still going to cost me £500,

in the end i choose to swap the big cast M3 lower sump section for a steel non M3 one and modify that, i dunno how well it will work, becuse dry sumppans normally have a channel right along there length, which i couldnt do unless i swapped to an all steel Bmw2002 sump, but i think i will be ok on that front as upper part of the M3 sump has a nice scraper plate built in and does a good job of putting the oil back in the well.

doing the job with in two halves with the sump bolted to its alloy upper part and a block i hoped to minimise distortion, it worked to a point, the sump did distort a bit but is flexable enough it will go back into shape when you bolt it up, i didnt do a bad job either if i say so my self, holding the finished artical upto the light i spoted 5 pin holes, migged them up and filled it with deagreaser and found just one more

after a really thourgh cleaning i painted the sump inside and out, not something i'd normally doo but i figured it would help prevent any possible future weapage, plus any tiny bits of weld splatter which may of been stuck in a joint somewhere are now permanantly sealed in and will never go up the oil pump, i hope :prey:

my only slight resovation with teh whole design is that it leaves a "wing" which will trap oil round left handers, on the one hand i think thats very bad news, on the other, the engine always did trap oil there before but cant trap as much now and the dry sump tank holds more oil than a normal sump, i might have to see if i can come up with something that i can bolt in to fill the void

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

lastly i went back to my ashley 3 piece manifold after getting the primaries to fit the head, i kinda lost any enthusiasm to finish it but finding i was getting stuck everywhere else on the project i dug deep,

first thing was to make a new "y" piece for branches 1+4 as i had to seperate them to get it round the steering,

basically with the primaries bolted to teh engine i just worked my way backwards, using some off cut bits of exhaust a bit cut from a new old stock astra back box and i bit from an RS2000 exhaust

and turned my ashley 3 piece into a 4 piece

              Graham,

If you want to make a revision two sump using the ally M3 one, stick it in the post with a a dimensioned drawing and i will happily mod/weld it for you FOC.

              Doug.

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

                      a little progress,

having finished the exhaust manifold i pulled the short engine out, and put a std m3 piston on one of my nice new steel rods, piston pokes out the bore by 2.5mm, but my new accralittes when they get here will be 1.5mm shorter, so they shoukld end up 1mm out the top of the block which will work well with a std head gasket which is 1.75mm thick

i might have an easier job of it though if i can have the loan of your dry sump bits
