Re: A racing bmw 316, hopefully the worlds most powerfull Atmo M10

its twin box, and sounds quite quiet, the problem with noise always seems to be not the overal noise level, but the fact that most engines just want to pop and bang when you try to hold them off load at noise test rpm,

one engine i could only get through noise testing by telling them it reved higher than it actually did, so as to avoid the pop/bang rpm

Fantastic read, really interesting stuff Graham, and particularly interesting to those with little experience in engine building such as myself. Keep it up mate!

Re: A racing bmw 316, hopefully the worlds most powerfull Atmo M10

one set of throttle bodies feeling rather naked

to give some clothing options i bought some short rampips of cossie matt, these are intended for 48 not 50mm throttle bodies so

i put them in the lathe and opened them out a bit, but to be honest i cant see a 2mm set doing anything, it certainly wont reduce flow

with a strip of steel and a "G" clamp i have an adjustable mount for the outer fuel rail

            the other intake trumpet option

dave walker fiddling with the ecu,

we had a mapping session today and have learned a few things,

we started out mapping it on the short ram pipes, peak power was a fairly dissappionting 206bhp with 185lbft,

we then tried playing with the cam timing, allbet it i can only retard the cam, as theres not enough valve piston clearance to adavance it, it didnt like the cam being retarded, so a note to self is to put bigger still cutouts in the pistons over the winter so we can try advacing the cam,

still feeling rather dissappointed with the power we switched to the very long trumpets, pwer leapt to 216bhp and torque rose by about 10lbft as well, still not great but dave looked at teh data log said err its gonna make more than that now cos its gone quite lean, and so it had,

some more mapping and were upto 230bhp and 201lbft, which is more like it and the minimum i expected to achive, were going to have another go tommorrow and see if theres any more to be had

Good figure G but I think it needs a larger bore exhaust system to make 250bhp

thanks, hopefully we'l find a bit, but to be honest i dont think theres much left without making big changes, as its already making 92bhp per lire and 80lbft per litre which is a lot considering the size of the engine and it has to breath through a crappy 8 valve head,

the combustion chambers are working well thats for sure it only needs 28 degrees ignition advance for peak power

Good luck Graham, hope you can find some more power, although the figures you have already are far from shabby.

As nick says maybe a bigger exhaust will release a few bhp and i'm sure you already have a few more ideas. The main thing is its running and healthy with a decent amount of torque. Should make for a fun racecar

possibly, i might see if i can talk dave into doing final power run without the exhaust to see what happens,

its also very very new, as its only got about 2hours running time on it so power should go up a bit as it lossens up,

i might also see if dropping the oil pressure back a few pounds gains me anything,

Did you try the 8 injectors yet or do they need mounting on the bonnet now

were running it on 8 injectors because thats what worked best on the 2002, havnt tried it on only 4 mainly because i dont have 4 that are big enough without being way way too big, im using 8 purple ones from a late xe engine which are rated at 220cc per in @3.0bar

the injectors are all second hand, they havnt been cleaned but they have been flowtested and all were spot on

                              206 to 216bhp is a nice jump.

Good to see you are nearly there graham.

yes, although the 216 became 230 once we had added more fuel, so it really actually jumped from 206 to 230 which is massive
