Re: A racing bmw 316, hopefully the worlds most powerfull Atmo M10

yes the power has come in very low, it makes for great torque, but it means the diff ratio is far too low, i've only got 107mph in top at peak power, and about 120mph before the power absolutely nose dives away, it would be great for lydden, but snett or thruxton dont even bare thinking about

gonna change the diff to a 3.9 which should get me around another 12mph

Re: A racing bmw 316, hopefully the worlds most powerfull Atmo M10

hopefully i'll be able to post up a few pics later but i had a good day at brands today,

first off the car didnt feel really slow until i put my foot all the way down and it didnt go much faster

my brain also took a lot of recalibrating to break much later than i've been used to,

all in all i qualified with a 55.610 which i was fairly happy with, the gearing was a bit short but it worked, grip was a bit lacking though, not enough speed to get my hard slicks hot enough, ultimately it put me 17th on the grid, i spent most of race 1 dicing with a couple of minis and had some good fun in particular with Ken welsh, and finished 16th overal and 3rd in class

race two was pretty much as per race one, which went drop a few places off the start and them make them up again and lots more dicing with minis ken in particular, and finished 14th overall and again 3rd in class

somewhat to my suprise in neither race did i better my practice time race pace was 55.63

i have a definate issue in that the slicks are just too hard, but it was great to be out again and nothing broke or fell off, i just need to find more speed from both driver and car,

one suprise of the day is how little fuel i used, about 40 litres in total, the turbo engine would of used 3 times that!

Glad to hear it all went well, it must be good to have built an engine like that and have everything work correctly all day

Congrats graham, glad it all went smoothly and you had a good time out there which was the main aim of converting back to n/a

                hopefully

the biggest issue i have at the moment is that the atmo engine just doesnt work the tyres (which are speced for the turbo engine) hard enough to really get them working, the budget is emptier than an empty thing so new tyres are out of the question so its going to be a case out out with the aluminium and plywood and try to find some downforce

can we not have a sharing scheme for tyres/wheels if your in the same race just swap half way or something, obviously graham will have to change his PCD so they fit, but it could work

excellent work graham must feel great to get a first good run out of the way and have no major dramas

Great write up Graham and a very good result. I'm sure that with some fine tuning the car will be very reliable and fast.
I'm gutted I couldn't come but apart from having to work i think it would have been a bit frustrating seeing as my car is so close now

Cant play with pressures and cambers to get a bit more heat into the tyres then Graham? Thought you would at least be able to make some improvement that way.
