Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

That certainly is an option to look into if this trick with the manifold isn't a good idea.
The manifold is now modified and needs to be taken back to the welder to be finished. Then its only a matter of manufacturinc the adaptor pipe between the new manifold and old exhaust pipe so that I could easily try both manifolds on the rollers.

I also changed the injectors for smaller ones. From 420cc to 330cc. Am I good to fire the engine up or do I have to worry about it beeing too lean?

Sorry , it;s actually the Four Stroke Performance Tuning book . He states that sometimes he uses slotted holes in the vertical plane on the exhaust mani , about 3mm . the slots are generally sized so that when the mani is raised , the floor of the port , and of the header tube match , and conversely when the manifold is lowered , the roof of the port and header tube match .
He states that when the mani is raised , it can improve peak hp a little , and when it's lowered , it can reduce exhaust gas reversion and improve mid range .

hardly , unless you put it under load ?

Great progress, hope you get it all ready in time so that if you do have the budget its all good to go.

Engine build and installation looks very professional and if it goes half as good as it looks you'll have a great engine. Good that its shed a bit of weight too, that never comes easy.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Thanks Dave! That means a lot to me coming from you.

I pretty much have the budget ,if my visa is not revoked any time soon
And the car is pretty much done all except the new exhaust manifold. It's back at the welder with the modified flange and should be with me again soon.
The issue will be getting the bugger dynod in time. It's the busyest time of the year on the rollers. And I'd rather book it after it has run to avoid any cancelling.

As far as the exhaust manifolds go I only just realised theres no way I can use the old one with this EVO II head without modifying it
The old manifold has way smaller holes than the exhaust ports are. And I cant make them larger in a heart beat since the manifold has smaller anti reversion stubs inside it. So It would take some cutting, grinding, welding and re-coating to get the old manifold to work.... it kind of was my back up untill now....

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Managed to book the car for rollers on 31 of may. Thats next tuesday. If all goes well I'll make it to the grid in time.
Now I need the manifold back from the welder.

And due to the cursed safety regulations I need to order me a new racing overalls and undies....
The old ones were beginnig to feel quite tight though

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

I'm not out of the woods yet. I can't get the new manifold back untill friday and theres bound to be some issues fitting it to the exhaust so its going to be a close call.

But thanks Jason, I really hope to get some good results with these new modifications.

Their Accralite pistons. With aftermarket coating on them. Nothing wrong with the pistons or the quality , theres propably been some grid in the bores or something. I haven't found a solid explanation for the markings. I hope it was a one time deal if not I need to some more research.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Today was the final chapter in making the new manifold. And all did not end well. The manfold had some fitting issues which I hoped would be cured when welding the pipes to the manifold. Well they didn't. In the matter od´f fact after welding the manifold did not sit in the bay at all. The collector was scrubbing the floor badly so no hope of fitting the rest of the exhaust system.
I had to shorten the straight 3"bit of the collector (well part of the exhaus pipe really) and make a hidious kink to the ehaust to steer clear from the co drivers floor. At this point I'm happy I've chose an 3" exhaus so hopefully the kink in a big bore exhaust would not mess the flow too much. Not happy with it but thats the only way I can make it fit. The only way I can get to the rollers in time...to the grid in time...Not happy with it.

On a bright side I've got me a finished manifold now and as the pant drys I can fit it and move on with the build .
So hopefully tomorrow I can start the engne up.Just need to make the grounding wire and pour in the fluids.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Shes alive. Fired right up and ran super smooth.

Todays issues were mainly with oil leaks. I did the new remote oil filter hoses all wrong they fittings were all leaking. Had to remove the hoses and re do the fttings.
The other leak was from the new cam cover. I thought it sealed nice. It turned out it did seal ok but the oil was leaking trought the cam cover bolt holes that are meant for the cover that is supposed to be used with this head. The holes were neatly inside the new cover but I had no idea they were clean trough the head. So had to plug 5 more m6 holes to stop the oil leaking.

I believe the engine is pretty much ready for the rollers. Which I postponed to 1st of may due to some work related issues.

                            Popped a little flame too.
