Re: A racing bmw 316, hopefully the worlds most powerfull Atmo M10

so its back to the 4 cyl 8v 2002 engine which with basically the same bottom end as the one im using now, bolts straight in, and can be stretched all the way to 2500cc, i'll be lucky to get much more than about 230bhp from it because the heads really going to struggle to keep up with a 2.5 bottom end, but it should give good torque and a wide powerband, that said i do have some demon modifications in mind so i will be aiming for the magic 100bhp per litre
Found this post back earlier in the thread, not a bad guess a year ago to what you actually got! Especially as you hadnt even started building it at the time!

an areo mod for the rear

effectively ive just extended the bootlid, the idea being to get a bit more downforce but with out increasing drag, which it should do, it should also make the end plates more efficent as air going under the spoiler wont be able to fall away under the endplates, it shoudl provide a fraction more sideways grip,

Re: A racing bmw 316, hopefully the worlds most powerfull Atmo M10

after various comments on here i took another look at the ride height and dropped it a bit, but only by 10mm, anylower and the geometry wil all go to pot and im risking the front tyres rubbing on the stiffening ribs on the underside of the front inner wings

after that i decided a front splitter may help a bit, so £17 later here we are!

Re: A racing bmw 316, hopefully the worlds most powerfull Atmo M10

                so onto brands,

it started out an interesting journey, with the trailer brakes sticking on, so i had to make a couple of pit stops on the way and ended up, disconnecting them!

the trailer also towed like an absolute pig at anything over 55mph, were as normally its rock solid even at 70 and i had to take some stuff out the boot of the race car and put it in the passat, i might add there was only what i normally carry in the race car, from that i can only somise the addition to the rear wing helped make more downforce.

at this point i must say a big thankyou to dave white who popped down to lend a hand

dave brought a corner weight gauge with him and had a quick meassure up, the distribution was just about 50-50 a tad light o/s/f but thats only to be expected as i wasnt actually in the car,

so off we went to practise, the grip leave felt pretty low, and more confusing to me was the car was loose at the back out of the corners, it felt so loose in fact i pitted and dave had a quick look at the tyres to make sure all was well, we later summised the rear feels loose because im getting on the power earlier and harder whilst still cornering were as with the turbo you dont boot it until in a straight line

i qualified with a 56.9, which was rubbish, 1.3 secs slower than the last visit, i wasnt happy until i thought about it, the car deffinately accerates slower with the longer diff although it was better to drive and easier on the engine, and in all honesty i didnt feel able to really push, then a look at the time sheets showed everyone was about a second a lap so slower, so i wasnt actually that slow! i'd actually qualitied 22nd overal and 5th inclass,
the 4 cars head of me were richard brent in his 205 and james lindrige who has a very quick xe powered mk1 astra, both of which are consderably faster in a straight line as well as pretty handy through the bendy bits, also ahead of me was Dave Usher in an mi16 powered 205, who agian had more straightline speed and nigel craig in his 2.3 pinto powred mk2, i didnt think i could catch the fwd cars in the race but i had high hopes of a good battle with nigel, honour was at stake here, last time i came up against nigel i couldnt beat him even though i had twice his power, that said we were at lydden then which didnt suit the turbo, and for some strange reason i get a real kick out of beating escorts

after pracise we weighed the car it came out at 943kgs so as i had predicted removing the turbo had lightened the car by about 50kgs, unfortunatly it also pushed home what i already thought and that was to take the fight to the rest of my FWD class the car needs to loose getting on for 200kgs

back in the paddock i thought about the oversteer and decided to stiffen the front anti roll bar, which proved the right thing to do, because even on the greenflag lap of race one the car felt sharper,

the speed of the rolling start was just right for me, just fast enough to be were the real torque kicks in in 3rd, and i was away, out dragging amoungst others nigel craig's escort into the first corner, we all made it safely round paddock and into druids in one big bunch, were much to my suprise i saw nick proudlock steaming round the outside, i've got to say nick was quick from the start, we certainly swapped places a couple of times, meanst while nigel was also well in the mix, a couple of laps later, it seemed to of settled down a bit, with myself leading nigel and nigel leading nick, that was until i had a massive tankslapper at surtiees, i thought i'd lost an engine and dummped oil on the tyres, but it was another car that had dumped oil, so the escorts got past, i think i got nick back pretty quick and was working on catching nigel, until oil on the track spun him out, after that i had barry vincent in his ex tony pond rover 800 turbo for company, that front wheel drive machine was very quick out of paddock meaning he closed up pretty close going into druids every lap and i had to make the bmw very wide to keep him at bay, once out of druids i steadily pulled away for the rest of the lap until we next got to paddock but i have to say its scarey find such a huge red car so close it couldnt of been more intinidating if it was a routemaster bus

i finished the race in 15th overal and 4th in class, first rwd car in class home, fastest lap wasnt anything to write home about at 56.7 but it was one hell of a good race

after race one dave gave the car a quick look over and took out the passenger seat, which to be honest i didnt think the weight saving was enough to do anything but every little helps i suppose, th eseat infact weighs 12kgs so it represnts about a 1% weight saving with me on board, and i clicked the front shocks up 2

race two was actually started twice after a red flag and was pretty much just a battle between myself and nigels escort, its worth noting nigels escort features a really trick rear end, featuring leaf springs polly bushes an english, lowering blocks tramp bars and a panard with some billys, so ithat just goes to prove just how well a std setup can work, i must admit i did enjoy watching some nigel exit corners sideways in my mirrors, he kept me honest though, i had the legs on him for most of the lap, but would take a chunk of time out of me at surtiees every lap, until i realised my brain is still in turbo mode which required braking there, once i perswaded my foot just to lift i kept him just that bit more distant and became confident i could hold him off until the end, i nearly didnt though, exiting clearways for the last time i thought i've done it, only to see him closing extremely fast so fast in fact neither of us knew who crossed the line first! in fact i had it by 2 one hundreths of a second, after the race i asked nigel were he found so much more speed on the last lap from, and it was a shit or bust lets try exiting the corner in 2nd job the difference between it working and not working for nigel was probably dave taking out that passenger seat, thanks again dave i finished 14th only one place up but thats ok everything in fornt of me was either massively lighter, more powerfull or both.

race pace was quicker too my best lap had inpproved to 55.6, exactly the same as last time out, but on a slower track so the car is actually faster than last time out the clocks just dont show it, but all in all i had two great races which is what its all about, as well as beating a pinto an x/flow and a BDA engined escorts

i think its going to be hard to get it much below 900kgs which would only be another 30kg out the car without splashing a lot of cash or getting radical with the mods, easy savings are a smaller battery dumping the rear bumper and fitting a lighter rear spoiler, unfortunatly its all going to hurt the weight distribution as the weight will all come off the back where i 'd rather keep it as the only thing i can think to loose from the front is the electric fan which really isnt needed with my nice big alloy rad, but thats only a single kilo saved

sure am dave, of coarse as always it would be nice to be a bit higher up the grid, but two meetings and four great races later and im happy, im actually enjoying driving the car more, it was fun lurching from corner to corner as if strapped to a cruse missile but such straightline speed does take something away from the driving itself, less power can be more
