Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

    Baby steps.

Treated the backplate today with all new Helicoil threads.

I just love these coils. I bet theres no news here but few pics of the process.

Next is the oil pump. It developed a drop of oil in the the tip of this domed nut. And no oil leaks above the pump so I assume its the pump itself thats leaking. Any ideas on what this bolt is and what could be leaking? Would be nice to know before I open it up.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

            You were right Graham.
Under the domen nut there was the pressure adjuster shaft and a locking nut. Non nylock though.
Took the relief valve out and it was sealed with an O ring to the bore in the body of the pump.

So I gather the two most likely place to leak would be the O ring, which looked fine though, or the adjuster shaft itself. The shaft would not want to screw out so I cant really know untill I try it with the new O ring. If it still leaks I think I'll need to re investigate or renew the relief valve.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

I got some advice from Mr. Rossin at Titans. He told that it is pretty common and olny normal that the oil creeps along the threads on the PRV adjusting bolt. And that a little loctite would be the solution.
I prefer a non curing thread sealant. If some should somehow end up in the oil flow its unlikely to cause any issues since its not tough.
So hopefully even this minor detail is soon sorted.

Also got me spanner today so I'll soon be streching some con bolts.

                  Hi Dave !

I feel quite the opposite. I've very little time and even less money!!
I've been stealing fuel and eating stray cat's for weeks now

Your engine has some nice magic solenoids in the head though....

Someone really took his time removing than right side drive shaft.
You even got the A/C compressor with engine that is a bargain.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

I could not resist trying out the new spanner.
I may have d´said earlier that the strech method is a simple traight forward job.
I take it back. The main girdle really made it quite tricky. And streching the bolt for 0,0055-0,0060"
proved not bee a walk in a park eighter. Even with the new longer HD spanner.
But they're all now tightened down.
For future engine rebuilds I'll utilise a snapped main girdle I've saved and make 5 separate temporary main caps to hold the crank down while streching the bolts. Should make it alot easier and give more room for the gauge and the spanner.

This metal bar was used as an etension for the spanner. I wonder does the Snap On warranry still stand. The last 0,001" was really tight.
Would be nice to see wheter the ARP2000 bolt would be as hard to strech as these ARP3,5 bolts

The future tool for clamping the crank down.

Now I need to re install the PRV valve to the oil pump and I can re mount it.
Then the oil pan, flywheel and the cluth and the bottom and would be ready for the revised head.

Heres the PRV valve. Did not leak oil when left for a day so I guess theres nothing terminally wrong with it.

If you are serious about wanting a VCT head, then drop me an email - I've bought that head I showed you, off the 'Bay, not got my hands on it yet though.

Yeah it's a typical scrappy removal job, pulled the tripod joints apart on both driveshafts, and loads of hoses and wires cut off rather than unplugged. There's plenty of bits to strip off it and sell on though... gearbox, air con, power steering, induction, alternator...

I pulled the plugs and turned it over by hand earlier, just to check it wasn't seized. Need to get it back home - it's currently sitting at the office - but it's feckin' heavy for a skinny boy like me, and my main car is an MX-5, so can't exactly pop it in the boot!

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Well I'm only semi serious would be nice to try it out sometime in the far future. But as said I'm quite tight on money now and theres only two pay days before the start of the season so really not the right time to buy anything unnecessary.
Cant even stap in on the roof on a MX-5
And even though it is a very light engine its still not very easy to carry around with the bolted on it.

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Put the PRV back together today. While doing it I noticed an abrasion mark in the oil hose between the pump and the oil filter
Has not leaked yet but the abbrasion resistant layer had worn off. Even the second layer had punctured showing tha actual hose. At first I thought no biggie just apply some self vulacanising tape and some fresh tape for protection should do it.
But after giving it some thought I believe I'm beter off replacing it. It beeing an pressurised hose and all.

Best not to take a chance on your engine with a relatively cheap hose - I'd replace it.
What cc are the injectors? Can't remember exactly what mine are with the AT Power TBs, but 330cc rings a bell.

                              My head just turned up...

Re: Escort Sigma 1600 Race Car

Got me a new propeller shaft today. To replace the old too short one that needed a heavy 40mm iron spacer to work right. Good weight saving to get rid of the almost solid metal spacer.

Not too sure on the quality though. Seems like a lot of ballancing pads were needed in this one

Also ordered some new oil hose from Think Auto. Stainless braided this time for added abrasion resistance. Need to pay some more attention to the routing of the hoses too.

Maybe I should move to UK. It would save me loads of € on freight costs alone.
