Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

thats one hell of a lot of rpm from an engine which is internally still almost a std production engine, let alone one with a 94mm bore and 87 mm stroke.

after a few issues with fuel pumps playing up and the rail starting to leak we got on with it, it became obvious the engine isnt in the same healthly condition as when i first built it, but its still pretty strong, its made

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

actually i lie it made 439.9lbft!

we still only used 15.5lb of boost, the boost could of probably gone higher, but we maxed out the injectors and didnt fancy trying to crank the fuel pressure up any more as its already 75psi on boost

          impressive as always graham

15.5lb of boost is low for that much power

Thats very impressive, well done. Most importantly - are you happy with it? Sounds like there's more to come too if you can play with injectors and things.

It'll still be slower than a Pinto though

Hope you get ready in time for the weekend and get a good run, even though Andy is on the reserves it'd still be a shame if he made it in at your expense. Good luck

yes it is actually, if you do a cylinder leakage test a couple of inlet valves are leaking a fair amount of air back into the plenum, and i've got an exhaust valve thats not exactly air tight.

i've no plans to take it to bits before the seasons end, although seeing the tell tail showing i'd revved it to 9957rpm seconds before running it up worried the crap out of me

                              thanks for the kind words

yes im more than happy considering its condition, in perfect nick i would of thought we could of got more like 525-550, we could probably of squeeked a couple of brake more out of it with a tad more boost because the injectors arent quite flat out, but its not really worth trying, as im never going to feel the difference a few more bhp would make, afterall another 25bhp would only be 5% more power

so its staying as it is.

anyway with the exception of the twin plate sintered clutch the whole of the transmission is bog std BMW, so whilst i could go hunting for more power, what are the chances of not breaking everything?

the gear box is an M3 one which bmw nicked out of the M5 is said to be good for 400lbft, so in theory im already well into gearbox breaking territory.

engine wise if i did want even more grunt, what i really need to do is put it one 8 injectors so i can get even more fuel in it and put some cams in it to make it rev more, i've no doubt that it could make 600bhp if i had the money or that balls to try, not only that the DMN rules mean if i did go 8 injector the car would become a class A and im happy in B,

IF i were to win the class by a country mile i or beat Rod birley in a fair and square fight then i would run in class A next year

Re: a very powerfull and troublesome bmw 316

                                brands hatch easter,

hmm almost better forgotton, i've never done so badly whilst coming away from a meeting with an undamaged fully functioning car,

for practise on saturday it was windy and bitterly cold -2 according to the temp gauage in the passat, although it wasnt wet as such i practised on wets fearing it was too cold to get any heat in the slicks, that was a good move as i was 5th on the grid for race one,

race one was a nightmare though, the trucks were out immediatly before us and covered the circuit with diesel and it started to snow slightly just enough to make the track damp, i had ZERO grip, infact i was one of 3 cars that spun on the warm up lap, the race was horrible, huge amounts of understeer with snap oversteer if i even thought about touching the throttle, by the time i had any sort of grip i was last but one and knew i wasnt going to make any real progress so just settled for not actualy finishing last and bringing the car home in one piece.

race two wasnt much better, my lowly finishing position in race one meant i was almost at the back, and once again we had a light sprinkling of snow immediatly before we went out on circuit, once again i found even thinking about using the throttle would result in the car trying to swap ends, so again i gave up and decided i wasnt going to feature in the results and drive to bring the car home in 1 piece, towards the end of the race the tyres did actually start to work and i was able to push a bit and did a bit of dicing with some of my class although by then i was a lap down on them anyway so i took no risks, andy pipe didnt have a much better race he finished behind me, so we had a TS 1+2, last and second from last

it wasnt all bad though, i felt at home with my new seating position, pedals etc, i cant fault the engine in the flexability dept it just had way way way too much grunt for the conditions, the only thing that broke was the alternator belt fell off, so i'll probably take the alternator off again, as its more trouble than its worth!

i shalln't make any changes to the car before the next round as im sure it was just too dammed cold for the slicks to work
