          Re: A racing bmw 316, 240bhp Atmo M10

:in the event prior to lydden i didnt actually change much on the car i was going to revise springs bars and make several changes, in the end i opted to leave the car largely alone, and just upped the rear springs from 300lb to 375 with a view to keeping the rear end flatter as well as raising the rear ride height slightly to take a bit of camber out give it better traction out the tight corners, apart from that the preflight checks were simply a level check and spanner check of the front end. oh and stephen gave the car a nice clean for me

i was gooing to be a busy boy at lydden as i had entered both DMN and the intermarque races meaning 2 practise sessions and 4 races, all in a morning and with the intermarque being IMMEDIATLY after DMN i would be coming straight off the track and onto the grid again, with barely time for a splash of fuel.

i've now got the messure of my new tyres, ultimately they dont seem to have much more grip but they dont need half a race to start working, so it was with some confidence i went out quite hard in my first practise, the car didnt feel quick and the track felt slippery, i'd qualified with a time of 46.8 which for me in a practise was pretty good as i always lap faster in the race, come the race itself i had a dammmed good fight with earlier in the year james lindridge, alex ribbins and dave usher, all of which i got the better off, and found myself closing on richard brent and bill richards but time ran out for me so in the end i had to settle for starting and finishing 3rd overal 2nd in class, along the way breaking the lap record for the class with a best lap of 46.05 which is actually some way quicker than i've been round lydden even with the turbo engine, unfortunately my antics earlier in the year caused richard to react and make his car even better, so whilst i found more speed than ever before he moved the goals posts further away by lapping in a stunning 45.5

the rear end changes have definately helped the car and although still weak traction out the tight corners is improved although i think i lost a little rear grip through the long chessnuts corner, the net result was a faster car so im happy

the 1st intermarque race went to plan just, i say just becaus e i had downed a load of water inbetween races, i drank to much and felt seriously sick as i drove round, i made a lot of mistakes and missed 3rd gear numerous times which is partly due to the gearbox getting tired and it wont select 3rd in a hurry, something that was going to come back to haunt me later, but in the end i had a good hard race, and was the first non shiloutte car home which was the best i could of hoped for.

back in the pits there was barely time to do more than top up the fuel and change the battery and eat a pastie and drink a LITTLE water,

my 2nd DMN race didnt start quite as well early on a dropped a place to james in his astra, time and time again i caught him only to miss 3rd gear and let him escape, the problem being if i missed it would take 3 goes to get it, it was always in the heat of the moment when we were neck and neck i would miss it, i genuinely had the legs on him and should of beaten him but when you are mm appart and really trying its hard to think " change gear slowly" so i let him of the hook time and time again, frustrating when he leads me by a single championship point, so this time i finsihed 4th and 3rd in class, nice points but as the old schol report would of said " could do better!"

by the 2nd intermarque race i was knackered and wasnt able to puyt some clear space between me and my persurers, another missed gear let pete reeve in his TVR past, i battled hard to catch and pass him, and got alongside him out the hair pin, but he drifted so far left i ran out of track i had to either brake and lose the place or take to the grass, i opted for the grass and kept me foot hard into the floor, i nearly got away with it, but that part of the circuits edge is extremely bumpy and i ended up airborne on at least one occasion, ripping the front splitter off in the process, its a measure of how confident i am in the cars these days that more and more often im taking the risky rather than safe option which automatically looses you places, in the event i did loose several spots, going airborne though broke the red mist box and i was full of it, less than a lap later i was making up my lost places and was soon on the tail of the TVR, and i had no doubt whatso ever was going to pass again, in the end he made it easy and overdid it trying to fend me off and had a quick trip through the kitty litter, by now i was seriously exhausted and glad to see the chequer soon afterwards, another finish and 1st in class.

it was one hell of a morning, apart from the 3rd gear incidents which are as much my fault as the cars the car performed faultlessly, between scruitieering and the last race we never even lifted the bonnet, thankfully we didnt need to as there simply wasnt time to do anythimg other than refuel.

just one thing left to do, and thats to tell every one to lock me up if i ever think about doing so many practises and races in a moring again
