well, congratulations are in order, cracking season and wonderful reliability, minus the diff. Having said that, the poor thing has taken some abuse, best of luck for next year, now when is the M50 engine going in?

Re: A race bmw 316, now S14 powered again!

thanks guys, on balence its been a great season, i knew going into class C would be a huge challenge, if at the start of the season you'd of said i could win the class and or come close to a championship win i'd of laughed.

i've had some fanstic time on track, and some very memorable dices with bill, in fact i dont think i'll ever forget fending off bill lap after lap off for what felt like an eternity.

im well aware i dont have the fastest car out there, but i know where its weak, of course i have the age old budget problem, i should be well into the new shell build by now, but thats stalled, so i think with some desperatly needed tidying this ole girl wil have to do another season, it would be rude not to seeing shes had such a good result, i'll do a race report later but tbh theres not much to say!

Re: A race bmw 316, now S14 powered again!

                      ok report time.

pre event prep was absolutely minimal, i porta powered the worst of the dent from lydden out, and fitted a new rear light, checked the levels and sump bolts for tightness and that was it,

no issues at scruitineering so i put my good tyres on, my good tyres being a year old not 3! they are still too hard though!, the plan for the weekend was really simple, stay out of trouble and finish, that was literally all i needed to do.

practise was uneventful for 8 laps, circulating in a fairly leisurely 56 sec staying out of trouble, bill passed me at some point and i decided to watch and follow, that plan didnt work as i suddenly found a noise from the rear, it varied with throttle load so clearly it was the diff, it sounded like it had run a bearing, pulling off i headed back to the paddock, jacking the back end up the only thing obviously a miss was the temp of the diff, with no excessive backlash it seemed worth attempting the race, not having a spare diff with me or time to change it even if i could borrow one, it was a case of risk it or just not start, i decided to risk it, not starting left no room for error if things went wrong on Sunday, starting and having it lock up at the wrong time could also be disastrous, in the end i choose to start the race, it didnt do me much good though, the car sounded ok driving to the collecting area, as soon as i pulled out onto the circuit it made really horrid noises, i figured i'd take the green flag and pull off if the noises stayed, as it happens when the flag dropped i let the clutch in to be greeted by noises that sounded like the prop had snapped off and was basing its way through the floor, so i dnf'd before the race actually started!

after lots of pondering back in the paddock, i remembered i had a 180,000 mile old non lsd small case 316 4.1 diff , the ratio would be ok (diff in the car was a 4.3) the lack of lsd would be a serious issue not to mention the a low mileage small case diff struggles to cope with less than half the power of my motor but would be better than nothing, i also had a spare 3.9 pinion in a case and a loose crownwheel cwp that woulld fit my lsd depending on how trashed it was, 3.9 is too long but again better than nothing,

back home that night ii ripped the diff out, actually apart from the missing pinion teeth and a chewed but still intact crown wheel everything was in ok shape, but i'd have to mix and match casing parts, so with a quick rebuild i fitted the 3.9, i say quick rebuild, it wasnt so quick, by now it was 10pm and i'd been up since 4am, with an equil mix of b373, kendle and millers lsd oil (i only had a dribble of each) the diff went back in and midnight the car was ready to race again.

back at the circuit on sunday the pressure was on or it wasnt so to speak, overnight the points had been worked out so i knew all i needed to do was finish, that said i didnt want to win by coming last in the race or class so i did set a target of beating the bmw mini also in my class, the dnf ment i was on the back of the grid, which suited me it as gaps in the grid in front and no one beside me meant there was virtually no chance of me getting tangled with anything on the start.

i did a cautious start to the green flag lap not wanting to stress the diff and was paranoid about rear end noises (there werent any but i kept thinking i could hear them) on the actual start i hit the throttle for the first time, yes i still had drive and off we went although rather slower than normal, the 3.9 really hurting acceleration compared to the 4.3 not to mention all the shift points were different, and having followed the trucks on track the track felt greasy, it took me a couple of laps to really get on the tails of those in front, i only moved up 4 places mainly because i was being so cautious that by the time i'd passed my target bmw mini the rest of the field was long gone.

funny but the lap times held up reasonably well considering i was only driving at 7/10's and the gearing change making the car slower, i like to drive smoothly so keeping up momentum means less need to brake hard and then accelerate again infact i was doing the same 56 sec lap i had done in practise before the diff broke

the bottom line is i finished the season winning my class and second overall in the championship, something i wouldn't of dreamt of at the start of the year.

finally for now a few thank you's for just a few things they have done not necessary in any particular order or for everything

Karen for her support and understanding
Bill Richards for being a great racer and good sport
Pushrodking for buying crap off me for no other reason than to help me make the grid
John, Steve and Andy pipe for helping me out on various occasions
                        Stephen Bahr for general help,
Charlotte Bahr for helping to fund my gearbox rebuild from her student loan ( yes i did give it back with interest!)
Dave White for general help, but mostly for not hassling me about his engine which i havnt done much on
and finally Dave Walker for the use of his flowbench and mapping my engine on his day off
