    Re: A race bmw 316, 240bhp Atmo M10

in actual fact im considering a change of tact, whist still waiting for my new crank to turn up im having thoughts about trying to find an s14 head for it, it will move me up a class, but it is occurring to me that currently my cars miles heavier than the fwd opposition and i cant out horsepower them either.

the problem with going s14 is its very expensive to build a really powerfull engine plus such an engine wont work with my std roadgoing gearbox, but if i built a 2.6 s14 with a pretty std topend i could still get decent power and it would work with my gearbox and the weight of the car wouldnt be such an issue

Does this mean that there comes a point where kids pay you back rather than costing a fortune

500quid! blimey, seems alot of money, cant you just keep checking the bay and going to breakers yards, you might find one for 10X less because someone might not know what thier worth

                  Re: A race bmw 316, 240bhp Atmo M10

£500 was what i had to pay for the last one and that was minus cam carrier and cams i doubt i'll get one for £500,
they simply dont pop up in normal breakers, whole s/h engines make £2k, a complete top end may cost as much as £1K
i do keep an eye on ebay, but if anything like with escort stuff ebay just seems to ramp the prices up even higher

pricing up putting the m10 top end back together though sort of puts it into perspective price wise, as it appears one of my rocker arms wasnt quite machined right and has wiped off teh end of teh follower pad, wearing both the follower and starting to wear a cam lobe, just to replace the one follower and cam will be £500, to replace the other 7 valves which came from the batch that can loose there tips wil be another £200, if i have to prepare a new head casting to suit the bigger cc bottom end it will need line boring to suit the camplus potientially 8 new inserts so i could be looking at another £350 there and thats without even thinking about guide, so i could actually be quids in even if i have to pay a small fortune for an m3 head.

Sounds to me like you've almost justified it there Graham. Ultimately I guess it all depends on what you want from it all. If you get a lot more power and more enjoyment going the M3 route then I'd say go for that! A lot easier said than financially achieved though I know!!

I was looking at buying an E30 M3 before I got my latest RS2000, it was achievable with my budget at the time, but god forbid if anything went wrong, so decided to go the RS route again.

initally i wont get a lot more power going M3 route as i simply wont have the cash to stick cams and stuff in it, but i recon i could achive 250bhp without difficulty with the potiential to add another 100 plus to that figure

should of got a ford but if what your saying is that you have the potential to get another 100 horsepower out of it plus your saving the weight as this head will be alley agaist your cast head (correct?) then it doesn't sound like a question to me, sooner or later you know something will have to be done to either save more weight or get more power out of it so it will be a very worth while investment in my eyes.

How about looking abroad graham, in the rest of europe wasnt the e30 320is a 2.0 s14 instead of a straight 6? I have vague recollections of my portugese mates at uni showing/telling me about them?!
