glad to see your getting along with it graham how much of a valve to piston clearance issue are you talking about here

i've only crunched a few numbers on paper so far but were talking 1-2mm too little

After all the things you have overcome to get the engine this far I cant see something like valve to piston clearance holding you up for long
To finish first, you must first finish

Glad to see your moving about again, and to grab with those heads... now about these clearences.. the perfect cure to you enthusiasm or lack of it is my offering to do the piston tops for you... i've got this brillient zirconian grit pad on my grinder, i'll have that 2mm off the tops in minutes ...

i seem to remember he already put huge groves in the pistons on his milling machine and as far as i can remember, not much more can be removed, so to loose 2 mm is pretty big, your'll never sink the valves into the head by 2 mm without alot of port reshaping and then your'd have to make the valves 2mm shorter and your'll loose compression, so it looks like its going to have to be a thicker head gasket, however, a 2 mm thick head gasket is very thick and your'll loose squish and compression, without new custom pistons, this one is beyond me, but i'm sure graham has worked it all out and is just gonna let us sweat abit first

what i really need is a new virgin unskimmed block some group A pistons and some longer rods! total cost £3K budget for such things 3p

anyway here we have a nice new crank, and im using my usual pipe cleaner method of making sure the oil ways are clear of crap which they werent!

                in the block at last

finally for now i dropped in a rod with one of last years pistons ( same piston just different cut outs) in to check the crank/rod asembly would actually rotate in the block, which it does with very little room to spare, as you can see i have some serious piston protrusion going on here, its not as dire as it looks as the head gasket is 73 thou thick and i have a 42 thou/ 2mm decomp plate so i currently have about 0.75mm sqwish, although its rather unusal to run the piston so far up into the head gasket it pokes right through and out the other side!

                  Re: A race bmw 316, 240bhp Atmo M10 now going s14 power!

                  cams turned up today

they are minter than mint, and although a lot of money at £500 there cheap as they are about £600 plus vat each my other alternative would be spend £300 odd on getting cams reprofiled which would be a compromise especially on the valve lift front

that was the good bit, the bad bit is ive spent most of the day trying to machine pistons to work with these cams, its really rather a non starter, so im well hacked off because buying pistons wil probably put me out the running for any racing in the first half of the season.
                  ,
woosener do a very nice piston 12.8:1 cr with an extra low comp height to suit 149mm rods (s14 are normally 144 like mine) if i use a set of these i can bin the decomplate and the piston will be 2mm down the bore, using a thin ferriday headgasket i can grab back the compression lost by the piston being down the bore, engineering wise its a much better soultion and will even allow me to play with the cam timing.

Better to miss half a season to get it right than rush it to just get out racing eh? Although I must say it has made me glad I didn't buy an E30 M3 which I had my eye on at the same time as getting my Escort!

no luck with the machining then, i was afraid you might have to get new pistons, you should try what Tristan suggest, try and get them to sponsor you, maybe offer them a link at the top of this site too

no luck with the machining then,
the 292 cam just has too much lift for the crown thickness to safely cope with

can you not make out the difference by cutting the valves further into the head or will it still not be enough.
