Re: A race bmw 316, now S14 powered again!

i use the marker boards but thats the problem, the first board is way to early, i should brake hard at or after the last board, but in practise i tend to brake lightly much earlier at the first board and only brake hard at the second!

at snet i use the marker boards other places its changes in the tarmac or kerbing, some places i use advertising hoardings

Re: A race bmw 316, now S14 powered again!

      Good morning everyone.

Just wanted to say 'thank you' to Graham for the help he gave on my Pinto 2.0 Help thread on engine building and congratulate him for his braveheart at racing with what he has and achieving more than many others with lots more cash to spend on their rides. You're a good example that in racing, knowledge is way more important than money (although it also helps a lot. ). It was a pleasure to read/learn with your thread because I actually learned a lot. Believe me.

      Keep at it Graham.

      Cheers everyone,

      Mário Santos.

well done for silverstone, clearly there's much more time in both you and the car, concluded by your fastest lap, in practice being on the last lap you did, with the times dropping consistently.
Cars, because you can't get enough kicks out of walking fast.

Re: A race bmw 316, now S14 powered again!

i was quietly looking forward to silverstone, the last time i raced on the national circuit was 2006 with turbo power, last atmo drive was 2004, i did do the GP circuit a couple of years ago, but the two only share a single corner. i remember the shape of the track but thats all. I would have to learn almost as much as most of the other tin tops there, i say tin tops because the grid would also contain about 20 shilouttes. Dave white and the pipes came so i had a pit crew if needed which was nice.

i had a nice selection of saloon cars to dice with. just a couple were, lee Mcnair had entered his stunning integra, lee and i have had a couple of great races in the past, and the tally is one each, the only thing that worries me about racing with lee is his car is so immaculate im worried to death about damaging it! jezz francis had entered, now so far since he installed the 16v motor in lap times he's kicked my arse, i was hoping that wouldnt be the case again silverstone as it should suit my car better than brands, Pushrod king was there, now on a matter of pride i always like to beat escorts, after my new found speed at brand, as quick as nicks escort is i didnt think it would trouble me, but there was another escort out, and thats Tony Paxmans immaculate MK2, last time i was in the same race as it i was nowhere near it, the car having a 2.3 warrier lump and sequential gearbox.

          Practise,

i warmed myself and the car, it felt good so i speeded up, and quickly found myself following Al Philips sierra which was chucking out various shades of smoke, i was quicker in the twisties he not suprsingly had the legs on the straights, fearful of it blowing up right in front of me and that it held me up in some places twice i backed off to get space and twice i caught it again, unknown to me i was lapping in a reasonable 1.07, cars in the gravel gave rise to some yellows so clean laps were never an option, luckily at the end of the session i got one clean lap, i wasn't particularly happy back in the paddock when my crew informed me i was slower than everyone i wanted to beat thankfully they had missed my last flying lap, i'd clocked a 1min 6.4, and was actually 4th fastest saloon, only gavins monster pug, paul eves 4x4 saffire cos and ashley's supercharged pug were quicker, smiles all round then i would start 19th out of 31 overal, which was actually 2nd in class.

          race one

the rolling start was nice and slow which suited the relatively low powered and heavy atmo saloons, infact i got such a decent start as to out drag a hot rod or two with my outside wheels on the rumble strip, look proof below

there was a bit of a mayhem at the first corner but i made it through just fine as can be seen in this clip

your see from the clip that the tonys mk2 was gaining on exit of copse, and jezz is steaming along, i just held off the mk2 on the way to maggots, at the end of lap one i was still 19th i'd passed the caterhams of john chasey and nigel oven but some of those starting at the back in hot rods had come through, nigels caterham was soon past and john chasey got the better of me coming through copse, i was now well aware jezz was on my tail, the tactics were already going in in my head i knew i was second in class although gavins pug didnt have its usual turn of speed ( it had eaten some gravel in practise) so i might just have a chance of catching it if i didnt fall back down the grid, jezz deffinatly had to say behind me and not just for pride, so i adopted a pretty straight line into maggots which would stop jezz going up the inside and i'd have to brake and turn in sharp, knowing he would have to go the long way round, as it happened as i came towards the apex, johns caterham was widly spinning in front of me, fortunatly my line meant i just needed to turn in vary late to miss him, at that point jezz's luck ran out . after a couple of laps Al's sierra nipped past down the straight my poor ol, my not got much compression left S14 just cant live with a decent ybt, and i found i had young jordan batts driving a 1.8 turbo seat cup car for company, i became aware that my car was starting to smoke, i clearly haddnt lost an oil line and it wasnt getting on the rear tyres but was enough to be a bit unnerving, i had adopted a slow tight in approach to corners and i just had enough grunt out the corners to keep him at bay, jordan had a bit of a tangle with a hot rod which dropped him back, and i found i had tony's warrier mk2 for company, i couple of times he tried to get a run on me out of maggots or under braking at the end of the straight, slow in fast out worked right to the end of the race, mission accumpished 2nd in class and still 4th saloon home

Re: A race bmw 316, now S14 powered again!

            Race Two,

this time i was behind gavins pug, i knew from race one its engine was sick so might still get the better of him. In fact i got a blinding start and powered away through the traffic, by lap 5 john chasey had caught me and passed, no big deal i like to beat his caterham if i can but since john upped the power of his 1.6 sigma engine he has all the advantages, once john was passed that left gavin behind me, he tried to come through in several places, defensive cornering positioning and superior grunt out the corners kept gavin at bay (i told you his engine was sick), he tried an inside line at the end of the straight, but had to back out, about this time things werent going well for me, into the complex at teh end of the straight a couple of times i thought i'd lost the clutch getting stuck in neutral, obviously that made me slow somewhat! i got round that by not block changing 5 to 3rd going through 4th instead which worked but obviously isnt as quick, the car also had an issue with the left turn, if i pushed it hard it hated it, the steering felt odd and it sort of bounced and felt like the car was going sideways at the front, this wasnt good for me, it let gavin close right up, he soon played a blinding move, he managed to tag really tight on the tail of a hot rod coming through to lap me, timing couldnt of been better for him, the hot rod caught be just before copse and went up my inside with gavin mm of his rear, nothing i could do neither did a ppear to be able to stay with him, maybe his motor was gaining a bit more grunt?, lap ten i've got the warrier mk2 on my tail, but am controlling that one as i did in race one, a couple of laps later lee has got his honda past the escort, then manages to get a great drive out of maggots and a good enough run on me down the straight to stick it up the inside on the left hander into the complex, the one spot where my car really wasnt working.

although i dropped a place to finish 3rd in that race i still had a great days racing, numerous times were were anything up to 4 abreast, but it was all very clean.

lee and i have now done 4 races in the same class the score tally is now 2 all i cant wait for brands

the smoking was loose sump bolts, a reocurring issue that dave put right between races, dunno about the gearchange as i only had issues that one corner with a 5th to 3rd block change

Great write up as ususal. What is wrong with the left turn handling?

I am amazed that everyone missed the car in turn 1 in the video.

Re: A race bmw 316, now S14 powered again!

It was a good weekend Graham. As you say good clean, close racing as it should be. I have replaced my 3 year old tyres with 2 year old ones so now you are all doomed.I think my old honda might suffer at Brands with the weight it is carrying no chance of catching the Pug there.

I was gutted that i went off as i was hoping to have a race long duel with you Tony and Lee,i thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to learn some race craft ,i wasnt expecting to have the beating of any of you but am pretty sure i could have stayed close enough to follow lines etc.Lee i have brand new tyres for Brands if i get the car repaired in time so hope to resume the battle there

I had a look on TSL at various other championships and it looks like the times we were setting in the races were quite quick the fact we were with the inter-saloons just masked that fact. Looks like another early start at Brands. Seems as though it could be a good sized grid as well if those who say they are playing turn up.
